Great advice for retired people who like to have a hobby that would get them out in public more. A friend called me recently and said that he participates in barbershop quartet. Like you, he confessed to some infirmity (lack of singing ability) but found by singing with the others he is able to hold his own.
In a college speech course, I learned that notes could help me overcome stage fright and forgetting my lines. While I know many (old) songs word for word, I have never memorized and recited from memory any of my poems, preferring to read them--sometimes badly. As a professor, I tried to avoid lectures and use visual aids with few words ad-libbing what I was trying to say. I also became quite an actor/comedian because humor seemed to get my point across much better than browbeating. ;-)
While Christopher Reeve managed a couple of roles in movies after being paralyzed, I believe I will have to forgo stagecraft for the rest of my life.
