I am not a vegan, I have NEVER felt guilty about eating meat. It's the way of life for many. If we don't eat meat the animals will outnumber us and will hunt and eat us alive.

You have a good point. Human ancestors ate only vegetation and fruit like the great apes, the gorillas. But somewhere, meat and fish became part of our omnivores diet. Like the bear, we humans became the top of the food chain, depending upon where we live.
I have eaten some delicious vegan food. My partner eats very little meat and is very healthy. But I was once a hunter and killed for food, finding it just part of nature's way. I will admit that I find some food disgusting and that butchering can be bloody but not disgusting.
Some scientists believe that plants have feelings. So it makes me wonder if we cut the best of plants off, do they feel the pain? Do they like being chopped up into little pieces and sautéed on a hot skillet? Do they feel cut off from their roots and communication systems underground?
Finally, Native American tribes usually had a lot of dogs around. In midwinter when food became scarce, they had no compunction about eating them. Better than cannibalism, that was also practiced before religions began to prohibit it. Someday, with modern science, the eating of animals and fish will probably disappear. But there may be rebel restaurants where you can still get meat and fish, even in those times.

What a vivid description of what happened to you. But the brain has magnificent healing powers and I hope that yours is gradually healing from that trauma that was so drastic. I hope that those family you mentioned stood up for you and helped you in your worse need. My family did, until I broke free from them on my own again.
At 20, while a junior in college, having a rather routine spinal surgery in my neck to correct a weakness in my left arm and hand, my blood pressure to my brain dropped too low and saving me resulted in my being paralyzed from the neck down. Unlike you, my brain was intact, but morphine, keeping me from the worst pain, messed with my mind during those awful days after while my atrophied arms and legs came back to partial feeling very painfully and my legs came nearly all the way back so that I could walk again five weeks later.
For 30 years, I tried to be normal and independent until I could no longer walk as my spinal cord aged and neurons died. In all 59 years since my initial paralysis, I have faced new challenges and managed to keep ahead. I hope that you will be able to improve each year and eventually feel that you're not dependent upon your family anymore.
