That was quite an adventure! In my only experience traveling around the world once, it seemed that English was spoken everywhere, by everyone, even in other countries. I didn't have the problem you had. I've never been to Switzerland, but your description made it very vivid how exciting it was and different from where you came from.
When my friend and I arrived in Frankfurt, like you, we were a bit confused about how to get downtown from the airport. We were haggling with cab drivers offering to give us an expensive ride when an American stepped up and told us we could take the train for one Deutsch Mark. On the train into Frankfurt where he told us how to get a hotel next to the train station, he told us that he had married a girl from Hamburg and they were divorced. He was going to see his children over the Christmas holidays, a sad story as well.
One thing we learned about Frankfurt. At Christmas time, the hotel had no heat!

Fantastic story. It's great to go to visit the Swiss cities. They are beautiful as I still recall Lucerne. We purchased fresh baked goods and ate by the river and just watch the boats and people go by. That was the most pleasant time we had on our 10 day tour of Europe. The rest were too touristy and jammed packed with things to do. Is there such a thing as seeing too many castles? After 5 days they all blended together. But God's majestic mountains and rivers have a beauty that simply cannot be duplicated. Thank you Mary for rekindling a very fond memory. Peace, love and blessings to you, John Michael

Oh, sweet sorrow! Life can be so full of wonderful things to choose from, that we have to learn to let other things go. I do have a feeling however, that if Josh really has strong feelings for her, he should abandon the priesthood. A serious priesthood student would, in my imagination, also divert his looks away from her, seeing the love as a temptation to change his direction. And there's no shame in giving up, and choosing for love for a woman. Marriage is as holy as priesthood, I believe. Very nice story.

There are many types of Gods and Goddesses, even in China -each holding its own values in the believer's heart. My parents worshiped Kwan Yin, the Chinese Goddess, and I believe in God and Jesus. I think it is okay for others to believe and worship something else as long as their Gods teach kindness in humanity.

This story is certainly not my cup of tea. While I believe women might like the kind of treachery you present, it doesn't appeal to me. You will need some very strong editing from someone who likes the concept of your story to remove some of the "over-the-top" references to make them more subtle and therefore, much more powerful. As usual, my nitpicking reading came up with some minor errors that also should be corrected:
Losing and bride's maid, among others are misspelled.

I assume this is a true story. Many great stories have happened as result of encounters like these… Some very tragic because of the strong beliefs of people trying to subvert the passion of youth. It is sad that circumstances keep two beautiful people apart. It happens more often than one would think. Once again I would recommend that you get someone to help you edit the story to make it better before getting it published further.

I agree with you, the sooner a person has a plan and begins to work on it the quicker they will reach that goal, whatever it is. Unfortunately, the goals you mentioned are all monetarily based.
As one who has taken that journey to its limit and not been monetarily rewarded, I find that it is people, life and lessons along the way that are more important than any money anyone will ever gain. In higher education, philosophers are the least paid. While to achieve in athletics is a noble cause, athletic directors are paid the most for marketing. If we engage in war, whether it be real or imagined like sports competitions, the money will flow easily. But will those pursuing that path feel fulfilled of their contribution to the world?

I am with you. England is but a small island in the city of the world. Juggernauts like China, India, and even the United States, mark their peril. I have often wondered what value the Royal Family is except as ambassadors of goodwill and a drain on the British treasury. The way of the world is to intermingle with travel and living in an exotic place if one wishes or a place where one can possibly make more money. And globalization of resources and economy continues unabated, regardless what foolish old conservatives in legislators around the world want to do to isolate rather than open up the world of possibilities.
Once England forced Scotland, Wales and Ireland to be called, the United Kingdom. Perhaps your suggestion at the end of your poem would be that England and those other country identities, would become merely a part of, United Europe.

My grandmother suffered with it from 85 to 90 when she passed away with a smile on her face but no light of hope behind her eyes. She always kept eating long after she talked with anyone and understood. Let's hope there's a cure soon.

Sad. My mother suffered from dementia. For her last fifteen years, she wasn't the same person. Being blind from her youth, it was harder for her to recognize people. I pray we don't suffer a similar fate. It's a heartless disease. It robs a person of everthing, even themselves.

Alzheimer is a disease that attacks a person's mind, but the true victim is not the person who has the disease, the true victims are the dear loved ones who have to watch how gradually the person is distancing himself/herself away from everyone without any chance of ever returning. Truly sad.

My mom suffered from Alzheimer's. At the end of her life, I was the only person she remembered. My wife and I tried to take care of her, But the strain just became to much for us. I had to make arrangements to place in a nursing home, and that remains the hardest thing I ever had to do. I once heard Alzheimer's described as someone going through a house and turning off lights one by one. I found that to be a very accurate description of the disease. I only hope it's not in my future. It's no way to live or die.

I don't usually post comments on religious poetry. But the spirit of hope shown in this one is very strong and in a very positive direction. Let us hope that it is self-determined rather than externally determined by some "other" force.

...incredible writing Mary....divine countenance...a smiling face
tells soooo much....And, we spend so much of our lives on earth
looking for the smiling face of approval ...we want to see in others
the face of acceptance...saying...you can come into my presence
It's Okay!...Yet...how often deceptive!
As your poem pointed out...while the splendour of Christmas season
offers...gifts...spoils...you came to realize how much you need...in fact
that's "all you need"....the glad face "above you"...see the smile on His
face...The metaphorical use of Christmas...birth of a child...forming
relationship child-mother-father from the very beginning...also counts
for your relationship with God...His face seems to be...that of earthly
parents...saying to a child..."welcome...we are proud of you...just
the way you are...at this magic moment...God rejoices in you...all the
rest seems a little less important...when gladness...when acceptance
prevailes...when Heavenly Father looks at you Mary...glad...smiling
...you can survive the frowns...and rejections of any human figure...
May His face shine upon you...Dear Mary...and at Christmas when
Jesus comes to Earth...the smiling upon you God...becomes a man
so...you can see His blessing throughout you life.

...yes! Dear Mary...bad things happen to good people...God's
universal purpose for all suffering...I guess...but...as you've put
it soooo wonderfully in your outstanding poem....He has not
abandoned you/us/every human being...any more than He didn't
abandon Joseph....instead of grovelling in self-pity over difficulties...
....should remember God's care for the world/peoples...let Him see
and plane the future...that isn't possible to restricted human mind
to imagine...how good can come out of bad....how unfathomable
His ways!!!!!...and as the great Alexander Pope put it:
"Lulled in the countless chambers of the brain, our thoughts are linked
by many a hidden chain; awake but one, and in, what myriads rise!...."

I love autumn and miss it because we get very little here. I am struck by the reference to fall fashion. I find that chasing fashion is a rather strange and selfish act with only the purpose of selling more merchandise, something that most people don't need.

Your poem underscores two little-known facts: First, a biological survival fact that few people know… Opposites attract… It strengthens the gene pool and is a very powerful force in the selection of a mate. Second, that we, as humans share the same love and desires worldwide and are much more alike, than different.

And tomorrow comes too soon while we delay doing the right thing… Especially when it comes to war. It seems that the Arab Spring is being delayed by bitter wars. But I know it takes time, just like it took time for the Soviet Union to come down (in some ways it isn't there yet) and eons for the Catholic church to reform, these things take time and we must have patience if we are to "fear no more."

Frankly my dear, I haven't. All of my successful loves have been calm and beautiful without all the melodrama your poem suggests. Oh I have been infatuated, but those were never loves, only wishful thinking.
I think women are more likely to succumb to unnatural relationships, imagining their prince charming from the way they talk or kiss. Unfortunately, so many women get caught up in terrible relationships as a result that they can escape from.

Well I believe Andy has this right! It is I Cor 13 is very precise. That series of verses were read on my wedding day. Now to answer your question, yes of course love changed the course of History. Samson and Delilah are great examples of what people will do for love. However, today things are really no different. Men WILL truly sacrifice their lives for their loved ones. I know I would even though I don't want to. But if I am cornered and forced to make a choice, I would fight to the death for my wife and my daughters. Yes, love is for real and it's forever. Amen

Awww, there is no blueprint for this thing called love, Mary. I am of the opinion that love causes more pain and suffering than any other thing in this world. On the other hand it can be the most wonderful thing ever experienced, although most of that is lust. Not one thing wrong with lust, but it fades after a while, and that is where love, true love comes in. It isn't easy. By then you both know things about one another that was hidden in the beginning, but living with someone for an extended period both of you will see and hear these things which irk you which you will have to overcome. Hopefully you can talk things out without arguing if possible. Love. A gamble every time.

Wow! Such a GREAT poem with a timely message for all. That is the story of my life Mary! One time I wanted to yell at my daughter when she came home very late. I knew she was drunk so if I set her off she would walk out the door. Instead I told her that I was very worried that something happened to her and that she should know I am her daddy and I will love her forever and she will ALWAYS have a home to come to. She hugged me and started to cry. Wow! I almost acted mean like my father but in two seconds Jesus gave me the RIGHT words to say. Thankfully we have Jesus who provides us wisdom in tough situations.
