Shortly after the publication of Petals of Love on Wings of Justice, I had the pleasure of discussing the book with other readers who found it stimulating and entertaining. We all agreed it is an important and valuable work of literary art. What I’m sharing here is my short (slightly-edited) review of it first posted on Goodreads:
A BRILLIANTLY INSPIRED AND INSPIRING POET: Ask just about any visitor to poet Carol Phelan Aebby’s poetry pages and they will tell you she is a wordsmith of exceptional talent and considerable creative intellectual depth. Her book, Petals of Love on Wings of Justice, is an instant type of 21st-century classic due to her marvelous gift for fusing unexpected metaphors with the twin themes identified in the title.
It is a particular honor for this reviewer that in one of her poems, titled "The Young Poet and the Painter" she pays tribute to the story behind the publication of Elemental: The Power of Illuminated Love. But in the exciting pages of this volume she accomplishes a great deal more than that.
With the kind of political, social, and military turmoil we find ourselves facing almost daily in the world, Phelan Aebby’s inspired verse is like a welcomed light of indispensable intelligence that keeps one’s soul company throughout the long dark hours of a frightfully freezing night.

Our own government has betrayed us unmercifully. If we say, "NO" to their betrayal............in come the drones.............we are dumbed down some more...........Yes, I agree to the thirty minutes a day but the anxiety brought on by our greedy fingered governments try to steal even those minutes from us. Wonderfully written!

All great ideas that we know of were written down. Without the pen (and paper or parchment) these ideas would have been lost except to oral history that can become changed as it is passed down through generations. These ideas have caused great change because of their power to influence others.
With computers and the Internet, almost anyone can get their thoughts down on the electronic media and these thoughts can be spread worldwide.
The power of the global village is upon us, and everyone now has, "the power of the pen."

It does seem that quarrels sometimes make love grow deeper, for some reason. That cup certainly brings back memories, both good, and bad.
And there is certainly a difference between infatuation and mature love, hammered out while living life and all of its pitfalls and joys.

A conundrum: What the grandchildren should do with Grandmas antique china. As you've revealed in this piece, there [can be] poetic insights, and fine sentiment in heirlooms. Suddenly, a very different and much appreciated tune about the pandemic.
When "Eleven gulls take a fly..." they don't seem to try to avoid contact with each other and, contradict dr Fauci's strategy, also known as 'social distancing" and advice to stay home ;))
Love the bold "seagulls mew!". Pretty reassuring...
Poetry has been our anchor in the storm of the pandemic, helping to get us through the darkest moments. We are better off for it...

You have to be careful of the demon that enters the mix with his sly words, of just do it, as it won't harm you. Believe me the demon is real and it is we who are demoncratic when right or wrong is the way to go. Even in a society that is DEMOCRATIC at times.

I have not had children, but I like them. And I never would tie them down. Encourage their curiosity and allow them to make mistakes.
I see parents micromanaging their children these days while they multitask. This creates two problems: the child feels tied down and unable to make intelligent decisions. And, the parent is stressed trying to do everything for the child instead of being a parent that lets his/her child be a child and learn on his/her own.

A uniquely, character driven, story-poem. The imagery plays like cinema. Made me laugh visualizing that nun chasing Jacqueline around the room. The girl had moxie. Bittersweet memories I am sure. You packaged it well in poetic fashion. I loved your recollection of it all Carol. I have been hit with a ruler by a few nuns myself. I don't know if I deserved it but it scared me away more then brought me into the faith at that age. My dad beat me terribly both mentally and physically. The movie, "I Can Only Imagine" brought back memories of that place it time. Thank you for sharing.

A poem for our times. It needs to be read by those in power. While they will not acknowledge it, they will feel the sting of its words and no longer feel safe in their thoughts of nationalism and "security."
People have a real problem with, "turn the other cheek," especially the most religious ones. But Jesus, Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, Martin Luther King and others show the right way to defuse our anger at one another. And it works far better than war.
