Sometimes a prank is not timely enough. My brother tells the story where he was hired by a small company just before Christmas, just before the consulting firm he worked for dissolved. He told me that he had an office with a computer (something rare at that time) and ate lunch with the president. Everything was going fine until April 1. On that day, the boss delivered a pink slip to his desk. My brother asked, “is this an April fool?”
To that the boss, said, “No.”

Character cannot be taught. Young people have to be given responsibility for their behavior and character will come. I didn't know that evil was in control or lack of cooperation either. Worldwide, evil is declining with each generation. It's not difficult for Americans to succeed. It is only difficult for children who are kept in the nest too long to learn how to fend for themselves.
If we have any character at all, it is to stand up to those with money and greed and bring them down to eye level with us.

Most of us were on farms during the depression. It was much harder on city folks because food was easier to come by on the farm. You write of a simpler time when things were more clearly determined by the weather and hard work. Those times were much harder than today but we only remember the good times. It's great to reminisce but no one will want to go back there and live. The Golden stairs claimed a lot of people back then.

It really hit me because I have asked (to my shame) to be able to clean up my little office before I die. (My poor children will have so much Paper! to go through, even if I straighten it up)

I too treasure old ornaments. It gave me pain and pleasure to allow my older grandchildren to pick an ornament from "Mom's tree when I was a girl." I have cherished them for years, and want these dear young people to have one to keep.
As you said, they were left with love.

Letting go of anger and resentment brings a lot of happiness. We the adults need to teach the children, but sometimes the reverse is true.
You are accurate when you say, "choose to be happy," and "Choose to be kind" because it is a choice.
This is a happy little poem. Thanks for sharing your encouraging thoughts!
