Those principles may be inherently true in small businesses where familiarity and personal trust call for a lot. Having taught in business schools, I find that most people who go into business do so with both altruistic and monetary goals in mind. Unfortunately, most of those same people do not understand all of the costs involved and tend to look at revenue projected from their sales forecasts alone. As a result, most small businesses fail. And large businesses fail when they lose sight of their customers and their customers' needs and focus on profit for their shareholders and compensation for executives who “show” profits.
As a result, we have many people who have invested their life savings in businesses that have failed, some, repeatedly, and we have wealth being transferred at a very rapid rate between almost everyone and the very rich who no longer focus on customers, but focus on influencing government and making sure that they can continue to grow their profits in the most convenient way. As a result, the supply chain is filled with overpriced shoddy goods and foods that are poisoning us either by feeding unhealthy lifestyles or literally with GMO chemistry or trace chemicals. Our consumer-based society is rapidly squandering the earth's resources and spewing out unspeakable amounts of garbage and pollution.
