Very strong images came through this story and I could picture the scenes. So many didn't get the chance to return and the child again was the simple answer. All they really wanted was their mum and dad.well written once again, but I hope a new novel will appear soon.

A beautifully written Christmas story. Before I finished it, it brought a tear to my eye.
From the way this is written, I think you have experienced some of what has been put in the story. I have often been a reluctant Christmas participant in company parties.
Yesterday, I was in a home where loved ones were having dinner with their parents in assisted living. All was quiet, so I burst into Christmas carols just to liven things up. I found that everyone was singing along with me, to my surprise. Maybe next year, I'll wear a Santa suit.

A very intriguing story that makes me want to know, “the rest of the story,” like how Joseph escaped and got to the Channel Islands in the first place. Certainly fodder for a larger story or novel.
The only thing I didn't like was the reference to being saved from quicksand. I find “quicksand” to be more fictional than fact. It probably would have been better if Joseph had saved the young man from drowning or from falling to his death at the quarry.
