Hi Dr.Young, I came across your article at the right time.Being a single separated mother does sometime make me feel stressed out and perhaps inadequate and I do perhaps end up trying to be both the parent.I see the behavioral signs you mentioned in my daughter too and am stepping back today to get a good look at myself as a parent.Lovely article. I'm glad that Dan made it out of homelessness, but I'm concerned about his life before when he claimed to have so much. I come from poverty and frugality and never faced homelessness although I have lost jobs. I think the difference is that many people don't know how to manage their money when they have it and therefore put themselves in a place where they can easily lose everything. Statistics show that over 50% of the population is that way, with no net worth, although they may have a fairly good job and are spending a lot of money on pastimes instead of saving for a rainy day.
I also believe that to get out of homelessness, one must try. Those that like homelessness or give up trying will never leave homelessness. It takes a willingness, like Dan's, to move out into the world again. It is interesting that jail provides all the benefits that most homeless are looking for, including medical care and good food.

The very nature of deregulated capitalism is that money will flow to the rich and the poor will become enslaved to the rich. While the rich compete for how many estates they can own without living in most of them, they are forcing people out of jobs in the name of profit and forcing people, when all other resources run out, into the streets.
Like George Bush's, “Thousand Points of Light,” charities are supposed to take up the slack and take people off the street. Yet we find that many charities, while professing to be nonprofit, have expensive hierarchical structures with high paid executives and advertising to siphon off whatever funds are gathered for the people on the street.
The only real safeguard is for the government to step in and not allow capitalism to fuel greed, only innovation and goodwill. Greedy owners and their henchmen should be prosecuted for what they are––thieves. They should be taxed progressively for their gains and restricted in their excess, so that jobs will be available for those wishing to work.
There'll always be those with mental problems who will choose to be on the street, but those are few compared to those that are compelled by society's indifference.
It will happen or there will be a major revolution between the rich and the poor.

Good luck and best wishes to you and to your organization. Few human needs and goals can top yours. As a boy I ran away from an insensitive orphanage only to sleep in allies and pick fruit from trees to survive. If there was any organization around to care, I did not bump into them.
