Building commitment towards organizations in the era of downsizing (Article) - 5/22/2013 7:42:22 AM
Tata Steel has a good reputation and I would not belittle that. Also, as an industrial engineer, I understand the need, in order to remain competitive, that organizations must work for less costly and more productive solutions. This kind of constantly improving tends to lead to changes in staffing.
Downsizing in the United States has given organizations a very bad name. Basically, companies may have actually upsized, but, instead of hiring locally and building up facilities to accommodate the employees, whole divisions are outsourced to countries like India where United States labor practices and benefits are less and wages are far less. The results can be tragic, as demonstrated recently in Bangladesh, on both sides of the Pacific, with so many Americans unemployed or underemployed.
I'm not sure if this happened in India, but ever since productivity and efficiency left industrial engineers and was commandeered by accountants about forty years ago, the game has been to shift compensation from the working level to the executives in the higher echelons of the hierarchy. This practice has become nearly unbearable and is really counterproductive for society. The measures that you described, particularly company ownership by the workforce tend to shift the rewards for hard work back to the people doing the work.
The only thing that bothers me is the idea of worshiping the company (or company founder). Once people become loyal to the point of worshiping, the organization is doomed because little change will take place once it happens.

Seems to me you should be lifting that head up with PRIDE to have such a love, not without pride and bowing your head.
