Born to the Streets (Short Story) - 10/15/2013 11:04:30 AM
Tough streets make strong men… Some good… Some bad… I believe it results from parenting although I know of one, our own Ed Phillips here, who didn't have any parents at all after five years old.
Reminds me of an e-mail I got yesterday from my former student worker who has looked after his mother since before he entered college, has a successful trucking business and runs Man of Principle here in Houston, a summer program for young boys (and girls) giving them a strong sense of self-worth and direction toward success.
I know Ed's mother is very proud of him.

I wrote one similar poem for one of my teenage friend when he was on the verge of committing suicide after his step dad passed away. His step dad raised him ever since he was 9 months old, so he was like his real dad. He was 16 at the time. I wrote the poem for him and asked him to show to his mother as well, as she needed to read that too. They're both well after reading the poem. Sometimes we just don't know how our poems would affect others, but it's good to know my poem was read for a good cause.
Your poem, in its simplicity, said so much and so inspiring and uplifting it is by far a lot better than what I wrote. I think this should be posted in some professional offices, like the suicidal prevention center, or some places like that.

Interesting questions. One thing is for sure, those that wish to control have lying down to a fine art. With enough repetition, some people start to believe a lie as the truth, even though it flies in the face of even the most simple reasoning.

If we give up on the truth, will we forever live a lie?
Yes, sometimes in life (especially as a teenager) we accept a lie as truth to cushion the pain. Truth be known we are then living a lie.

There is something in young men's makeup, perhaps testosterone, that gets him into conflict easily. If adults recognize what it is, they can help channel that manhood into constructive challenges improving each young person's self-esteem.
The world is not violent, at least not as violent as the almost instantaneous news both locally and worldwide that arrives on our doorstep every day. Most neighborhoods are quite peaceful and not violent at all.

Wonderful words of truth Sherman! You know Abe Lincoln lost more elections than he won. What if he had given up? Thomas A. Edison had more failures that most of us could bear. Still, he was one step close to success. I grew up in the projects of New York. I now live in a nice home in Florida. I was not that talented, but I preserved during the hard times.
