One of the interesting aspects of capitalism. The wasteful gluttony of the rich, accumulated on the hard-working backs of the poor and disenfranchised, as well as plundering the wealth of other lands. Only now, when the privileged heirs no longer wish to pay the costs of maintaining these crumbling odes to ego, they conveniently dump them on the state like the pollution caused by the many undertakings of their ancestors. The largest monstrosity of all, maintaining the monarchy, must put England in dire financial straits.
Thanks for reminding us that while so many Americans love going to England see these stately homes, they have no idea of the cost to the nation.

Although the air war against Iraq was a pretty one-sided affair, the ground combat was very real and very dangerous. In the aftermath the air war was not always as one-sided, especially for those who piloted the helicopters. History may be the ultimate judge as to whether that particular war was worth the blood, as history judges everything in time. I found your poem to be one of the paths to understanding the war and the atmosphere around the world after terrorism and tensions of the time brought about the tumultuous conflicts in which we are still engaged. the futility of war never ceases to amaze me but the honor and courage of those who partake in it, is truly amazing ... your poetic mission is right on target ...

I haven't done the research, but I'm not sure that "some were missing, the rest dead." The air war over Iraq is very one-sided with most of the casualties civilians and those on the ground. Air war today is very "hands off" with more danger from inexperience flyers of very sophisticated equipment rather than danger of counterattack.
Perhaps your opening description could ease my confusion.
