When we were nine my twin brother and I had our tonsils and adenoids removed in the hospital. It was special because our father had his tonsils removed at the same time and he was so brave because he had them removed without going to sleep like we did.
I don't recall any special gifts or entertainment like clowns in those days, but we were very excited about getting all the ice cream, pudding, and oatmeal that we could eat, something we didn't get that often at home.
