Wonderful, I'm glad they enjoyed it. My mother realized, last year, near 89, that she could no longer maintain her apartment. She went willingly to assisted living and has been enjoying the amenities… The group events, the theater, library, and cafeteria. Unfortunately she has nearly lost her hearing, and has always been very particular, so she just been moved again after having disagreements with three previous roommates. We are concerned that they may kick her out of the place even though she doesn't pay anything because when my father was sick and dying, they ran through all the savings they had. She's on Medicaid.
I too, have free care, thanks to my company, a state university. I was struggling to pay for my three attendants, when we acquired long-term care insurance from another state university in 2004. I inquired and found that I could sign up and buy the insurance. In 2006, my doctors proved that I needed long-term care, and since our insurance waived pre-existing conditions, my care was funded through 2016. There have been three mandatory increases that are stretching the money out until 2019.
I feel like I've won the lottery because I don't have to dip into my retirement savings for my care and feeding. And I can still live in my home for as long as I wish to. It's wonderful to live in the land of free!

A wonderful memoir of both your father and mother. My father was not like me either, he was a very gregarious Midwesterner who tried to befriend every person he met. As a trucker, he knew how to get waitresses to deliver what he wanted when he wanted it. He never rose to the level of your father because he didn't want to take those risks for his family. He prepared the foundation for who I am, just like your father did for you.
Extremely well written, but should've been put in the story section.
