Dealing with Harsh Realities through Genre Fiction (Article) - 3/20/2014 6:00:54 AM
I prefer science fiction based on scientific reality because it is much more plausible than fantasy. In order for fantasy to work well, it must be satirical or allegorical. Otherwise, it is pure nonsense and merely a pastime like watching a soap opera like Star Wars. That said, I have been fascinated at the human toll taken in The Walking Dead. The last episode was heartbreaking because a child who had killed another child had to be killed because she was becoming potentially dangerous from being so traumatized. Tough stuff.
On the other hand, acting out human behavior (usually wars) and emotions on other planets is simply preposterous. So as some of the pseudoscience in science fantasy that spilled over into earthly endless episodes of vampires, werewolves, superheroes, and the countless conspiracies conjured up by countless reruns of originally good fiction.
