One thing is true, as evidenced by the result of the recent presidential election. The average person wants straightforward and simple answers why things happen. They watch a lot of television shows where the expert sleuths solve complicated crimes in a half-hour. Novels tend to set up heroic situations with complicated plots that result in victory if the novel is to sell.
What I'm trying to say is that the public wants to know what happened. When there is little evidence or plausible causes are unclear, all kinds of theories get created, often blaming the heads of state at the time for not doing their job or actually causing the event to occur through conspiracy. Apparently, conspiracy theorists make money with their books and movies, because there is a plethora of books out there that you have reviewed for this essay.
These theories provide a straightforward and simple answer to unsolved situations. You are right in the tendency for the United States to go to war over an incident, the latest being 9/11. And, it's pretty easy to tie together all the conspirators in politics and the military-industrial complex wanting to go to war for oil in Iraq over an attack by an Egyptian/Saudi based terrorist group, Al Qaeda.
I believe, like the Knights Templar, mysterious groups of conspirators like the illuminati will grow in legend and mythology with very few facts over time. I'm sure that the television show looking for Bigfoot will find him next year… If not, the year after that. People are very interested in seeing him in a cage in person.
