I can see why the story was published… It's a delight! It's interesting that you advertised and then reviewed the literary quality of his work before you met.
Twenty-two years ago, while advertising for someone to help me, her brother contacted me from a block away and said that his sister wanted to work. While I had interviewed several before, I never had one that had an agent like, her brother. They didn't show for the first interview at my house, although I left the garage door open so they could come to the front door through the garage.
The next morning, I found a note on my car in the garage. I called him and they arranged to come back. Under his watchful eye, we bonded quite quickly, and after a few days, his services were no longer needed. Although we are worlds apart by background, we see eye to eye on many things. She's a very good writer and has some fantastic tales to write about trying to escape from Vietnam six times after being forced to spend some years in the forest, a city girl, thriving by growing sweet potatoes and chickens.

I visited Victoria once and found it to be a pleasant, staid and rather old-fashioned, place. I never would've dreamed of it being a den of iniquity!
Your story shows considerable knowledge of the character of opium dens. I have read a few entries… Personal stories that were not fiction, like one fellow's encounter with Errol Flynn in an opium den in Hong Kong… and others. And though I have prowled Chinatown in San Francisco, I've never so much as been close to an opium den. My knowledge of drug experience is only the brownies I ate while having a party at my house brought by a student as a trick on me, the square.
I was expecting something more exciting out of the end… Some revelation or twist, but the story is very well written and one feels like you are actually there. The ending does seem to beg a sequel, a novel… more elaboration.

...melting away dreaming...comes to mind...your poem's words
juxtaposing the "strange" and the "real" world around a dreamer
just waking up to ...contradicting...everyday experience...

I wish I had bought a Salvador Dali original painting many years ago when I first learned of him. You have painted a beautiful portrait of the surrealist's work in your poem. Einstein theorized that space and time were curved and Dali took full advantage of that idea.
A cool write that I enjoyed.
