While I don't generally like people who have nice little recipes for other people's problems that they peddle with books, seminars and blogs, I tend to agree with you that happiness is the key to success in life. Based on your bio, you certainly have had a lot of life experience with what organization do to people's ego.
After a long period of depression because of what life threw at me, I decided to focus on my daily routine and work on making it better with my ambition and sense of accomplishment. Things like brushing my teeth, making and eating my breakfast, cleaning, caring for my yard and my commute, things that most people ignore and find wasteful and repugnant, became my joy and challenge every day.
At work, I focused on taking on things that others wouldn't and ignored all the social scuttlebutt that went on daily with people trying to gain advantage over others. It worked. I kept my job when others lost theirs, even though my income didn't grow. I retired happy and financially healthy. Now doing what I like--write.
