Well written from someone immersed in seafare. It seemed obvious to me that Skipper had no other purpose than to go out on a suicide mission to catch fish on a day when everyone else would be home celebrating. But he had no other purpose left after the accident seven years before. So he left everything up to fate and went out anyway in the face of a building storm.
I'm not sure if the conversation simply took place in his mind or as a dream during the time he was unconscious, but it certainlyy changed his mind about some things. As evidenced by the crafted ending.

Interesting discussion of why boats are named. I didn't know that before. Got me to thinking about airplanes. While airplanes during World War II were named by their crews, I think most airplanes today only go by their number, probably because of safety restrictions and country identity.
In this article you address yourself in the third person as "John." While you might think this is academically correct, unless you are writing about some other "John," than yourself, overcome your school taught phobia about first-person and write "I" instead. ;-)
People do name their cars. Women probably do it more than men. I had a long name for my 57 DeSoto Firedome hemi engined beast. One Eyed, Flying Purple Chevy Eater. Too long to put on a license plate like I did with my: Monte 73. People still asked me what year it was.
