I agree with all of your eight points. And, I would add that it also is helpful if you are actually able to experience some of the things that you read about. For example, my impression of certain places was changed greatly when I actually visited those places, travel the land (like by four days in the Philippines) and talked to the people. This information makes writing my novels much more realistic.
