Good advice. And a pattern of living that I've always followed. My mother was always extremely organized, having to work and raise five children. I learned from her skills managing the household and emulated them. She was my Lillian Gilbreath. Why I became an industrial engineer.
I always found a little messiness while working with projects, okay. But I found that good filing in an organized manner saved countless hours of searching for documents. When I discovered personal computers in 1986, my physical abilities to manage documents with my paralyzed hands and arms had declined to the point that I moved all my work to the computer.
During my last 25 years of work, I anguished at the look of my desk when people carelessly dumped documents on it that I could not remove or put away. I was not allowed to hire good help to help with managing my paperwork. My computer files, while not immaculate, were very well organized and contained a lot of data that I could retrieve and print in good form usually within 15 minutes. After my first hard drive failure, I never lost any files or data.

There aren't many places and I will need to go find the actual area, however I have been told there are some forest areas that are probably on private land that they do allow hikers to use, but that is the restriction, they want to keep the land as close to what it was in the past so they require pack "everything" out.

Great analogy leading into your article. However, in all my years of travel, some of it in wilderness, I have never heard of having to bring one's human waste back from the trail. This must happen on heavily traveled trails where tourists go. Real wilderness has been traversed by us for thousands of years with no need for "cleaning up" because mother nature takes care of our scat as efficiently as it does all other creatures. We do have a "herd" instinct that does create quite a stink when we crowd together in the same place and call it "wilderness."
I agree with you wholeheartedly about what kind of legacy one leaves. While I was under suspicion and threat several times during my fortunate thirty-year last work, I tried very hard to leave behind work that I had created for those that would follow. I asked for an understudy to learn all that I was doing because so many continued to learn the "hard way" that their supervisors required. That never happened and I was "locked out of my email computer" and told to leave the office before I could review the email and save any emails of value to me. (There was no derogatory information on that computer/system and I separated my personal email from my business email).
Thankfully, my nonstandard computer with many years of work and a powerful database could not be locked out. Fortunately, too, a young employee who admired my work, saved that computer and its data for others to use. I hope that I left only good behind for those that followed.

You are doing exactly what I meant. Life hands us challenges. We can sit around and feel sorry for ourselves, or do what you have done, made the best lemonade possible. Many don't want to travel and can. That is OK, as long as they don't sit at home feel sorry for themselves and not do anything.
Many can't afford to retire, but also can't work. There are many things we can all do with the gifts we have been given. I laud you for diving into writing and creating your own community. Thanks for the input.

Some great advice for those either in or thinking about retirement. Unfortunately, the best laid plans… Can be waylaid by circumstance. Two examples that come to mind are early retirement caused by being laid off and being unable to find another job, resulting in much lower retirement income than originally planned. The second of course, health failure, is the worst, because it can put financial burden on retirement and change plans as far as continuing to be vigorous and carry out all of those "freeing" options that retirement is supposed to bring.
I switched work at retirement from writing and analyzing factual information to writing fiction in retirement. My disability greatly limits my ability to travel, interact in the community, and a social life. But I have been preparing for that eventuality a long time and it doesn't bother me too much as I dive into my writing and Internet connections instead.
Of course, unless one is financially independent at retirement, options become quite limited. And, unfortunately, many many Americans are being faced with these concerns these days.
