I am perhaps the least informed about judicial matters which I find to be very strange and unfair (the law is an ass?) favoring the rich and punishing the poor for not being able to hire brilliant, cunning and shady lawyers. As for immigration, I have an opinion that the reason for immigration primarily economic. Once one provides economic opportunity in the countries that people are fleeing, they will choose not to flee and seek opportunity in new and dangerous places. In short, and worldwide poverty in the immigration problem will be solved.
So, I am probably the least advised to tell you about electing judges (or not). But I do have an opinion:
When I go to the polls here in Texas, I am faced with a huge ballot of judges to elect. In most cases, the judges are from only one political party, and have served in that judgeship for many years without opposition. I do not know, or have heard of any of them. If I read their bios that I can obtain over the Internet now, but not in the past, I still probably won't be able to determine if they are good judges or not.
So, I would like to see the system here in Texas changed so that like, the US Supreme Court, all judges would be appointed by elected officials and only be allowed to serve a term limit of, say, 10 years. After that they would not be allowed to serve again. There are plenty of young lawyers coming up that can fill the void in the old crusty, set in their ways, judges can be removed from their high salaries and vaulted positions.
