My kind of read. Authentic historical fiction. I never minded being alone in the wilderness. So this story matches my inner frontiersman.
One thing, though. In 2003, I broke both bones completely 6 inches above my ankle on my right leg. Although there was a loud “crack,” at the time, and I went to the emergency room immediately, they looked at my foot and x-rayed it because I ran over my foot with my heavy wheelchair and my foot was behind the wheel, all twisted around. To get it out, I had to back back over it. Anyway, there was no pain, either when it broke or afterward.
I put my weight on that leg to transfer to bed and back to my wheelchair without pain. However, at night, my leg bothered me while sleeping and I wore a deep sore on my heel. I went to another doctor after two weeks, and the broken leg was discovered. It was never set and I wore a boot and not a cast. It healed in five months. I emphasize… there was no pain. But then, that leg, while still able to hold my weight while standing, was partially paralyzed with some altered feeling.
