Thanks for reviving some of the ancient names. Poets too often deny themselves classical heritage and we laymen suffer for it. For generations we've had to rely upon science fiction writers like Frank Herbert and A. E. Van Voyt to teach us about the world of the ancients ... really just our own world without the gadgets ... and as population grows and swarms, and water shirks and hides, our children may desperately need to know these names and stories.

Without research, I would say this poem is referring to the Egyptian view of the vast desert surrounding the fertile strip of the Nile River.
I am unfamiliar with the terms except for Ra the sun God. One thing that I do know is that 5000 years ago when the pyramids were built, the Sahara was a much more productive place with much more water and fertile land than today. Throughout the Sahara desert there were many many more oases and even lakes that supported large populations of people. When the desert started closing in and became more and more like it is today. People sought religion to try to overcome the despair caused by the loss of water and all that it brought.
