A fast paced tale of war, music, love, war, history, fantasy, war, aliens, superheroes, super villains, magic, war and love. Forrest Gump has nothing on WWII Army medic Steven Ronson who slides effortlessly from adventure to adventure spewing arcane bits of history, culture, science fiction and religion as he travels around the world. Somehow, we are left not really caring. Artless, humorless, colorless, bereft of soul, wit or charm. This insane tale packs an orgy of disparate elements into a rapid fire action adventure that provides no satisfaction. Okay, the author did some research, wrote some essays and tied them all together in a tangeled mishmash of a hellish nightmare. Did I mention Jesus was an alien?

This is Jason Bourne Squared! Costello has blended fact with fantasy (I hope)in a most entertaining book that has elements of history, religion, science fiction and fantasy. The hero, Steven Ronson, fights his was through World War 2 in the Mediterranean Theater, following the 7th Army from successful campaigns in Africa into the lesser discussed, or opposed, invasion of Europe through southern France. Liberating the Nazi death camp at Dachau he follows some of his typical Army buddies as they search for souvenirs in Nazi officer's quarters. After taking the daggers and pistols they give him what appears to be medical 'stuff' including pills and letters that he doesn't read until later. From here he returns to the United States and a budding musical career, an encounter with a man and his niece, on a mission to return to war-torn China on a mission to stop the ultimate evil, and a destiny he could not foresee..

A story of many adventures,it shows the human side of those who are heroes and display courage no matter what they feel.The main motive is duty,but there's love and anger in there too. It ends on an interesting note: not altogether tragically, not happy-ever-after, but what a teacher of mine called 'a note of hope'and a suggestion it's not all over.

Steven Ronson, a medic during WWII, is part of the liberation of Dachau, the German concentration camp that conducted heinous medical experiments on people detained there. While searching the grounds, Steven finds a formula for mortality and begins to take it not knowing the formula was created intending to keep people on earth as a form of punishment.
From the horrors of WWII to post war America, where Steven learns he has otherworldly musical ability, then on to China, Steven follows a quest to meet up with Chow Li, an immortal. His journeying has him meeting a variety of characters who touch his heart, leave him too soon, and those who enlighten him about Hitler’s rise to power being backed by a Aldebaran, who had no knowledge just how corruptible the human ego can be.
Taking the immortal potion, Steven experiences that he cannot be killed and that he has extraordinary powers which he can use to team with Chow Li and two new friends, a former missionary and his niece, to overthrow a predatory evil influence waiting to be unleashed on mankind.
I like that the author takes the reader on both a metaphysical and historical tour, detailing unknown knowledge in such a way that it caused me, at times, to reject what I learned about history. While reading the book, I found myself excitedly embracing the unbelievable, transfixed by the revelation the Aldebaran Solar System is the origin of humanity, and totally caught up in the relationship dynamics of the amazing assortment of characters Stephen attracts, some of whom have inconceivable knowledge.
Diary of an Immortal is a gripping read filled with secret information that turns history on its head. The book embraces superstition, romance, the abuse of supernatural powers, the fight for noble living against the tyranny of despotic evil, and takes the reader on a journey of a personal vendetta against the laws of nature. The book spans timelessness in unimaginable ways. Diary of an Immortal is a wildfire must-read.
