You don't seem to verify the “meandering plot” in your discussion. I haven't read Robbins, but I do know that writing good characters that people can identify with is an ability of good friction writers, regardless of the plot. Most people are more interested in characters than plot. I guess that's why people like gossip so much.
I read that prolific writers like Robbins with big publishing backing up, use a lot of other writers to churn out books at a rapid rate. These writers may set up the storyline, but the other writers fill in the details. And, that many books are written on formulas to sell. That's why I like indie writers who have original things to write about.

I haven't heard of the movie, Little Black Book, but your review has piqued my interest. It is interesting how you identify with the character in the story line. It looks like a great cast of proven stars. Anything that Kathy Bates is cast in is usually quite good.

I love good historical fiction. I love automobiles and racing. I love technology and battles over its origin. I think that I would love this book.

I have mixed feelings. I love historical fiction, but since the original, Time Machine, I find the devices used in the stories to be more comic book than science. I started watching the hit TV series, Timeless, and then quit because it was beginning to be so preposterous. I did stay with 12 Monkeys, although it was hard to follow with all the wild flashbacks.
From what I read from you, Walker is very good at developing characters. I would agree that the characters can carry even a flimsy plot line like time travel (very unlikely for a very long time into the future).
