Well I don't equate these lines of your personal philosophy with any story (except your own?), I find them quite charming and revealing. I especially like the third line in your line of thinking while writing it.
I do sense a sense of regret. I guess we all have regrets, but sensors nothing we can do about them, it's probably better to look forward to what we can do better in the future.

There's awe and beauty in not understanding everything. Mystery...if relationships were so easy, they'd be boring. You allude to this when you state your stories of friendship are not a definitive roadmap, but a journey.

You might say with this one that you were, "beside yourself." I followed all the psychologizing a bit offputting, but when I find myself alone in places wild I do a bit of soul-searching as well.
Like you, I like the wild places. I remember watching 30 or 40 dear and love play in the autumn and tried to imagine what that place was like 100 years or more earlier when buffalo may have roamed that place.
You made me recall the ToastMaster toaster my roommates bought at Goodwill when I first came to California. That toaster made perfect toast up until a few years ago when my helpers apparently gave up on it. I never did, fixing it every time it needed a little fixing.
You learn something new all the time. Last week I read about an aga and could only discern that it was some kind of fireplace or space heater. And now, today, I read about it in your story. I must confess, in all my years, I have never heard of anything called an aga before. ;-)

While reading, I kept trying to grasp the location for some reason. The California coast? And then I tried to understand whether this was mere fiction or whether it was "family" nonfiction. In the end, it appeared to be an old man's daydreaming at the end of the day about love lived and lost in the past. All in all, I found the story quite poignant.

A heart wrenching, poignant story. Your vivid descriptions, like those of the storm, were superb. I'm not sure if medics carried rifles. Maybe just pistols. But, if as the story suggests, the medic was an angel, all bets are off.
