This is my third article in religion all relating to the importance of considering spiritual changes in our lives. Particularly the issues: are you certain where you are going upon death? Can we be assured we are saved?
This article is a parable about butterflies and caterpillars and the symbolism in their life cycle called complete metamorphosis. It presents how the completely different life stage changes within the butterfly and the caterpillar apply to our own spiritual life changes. The adult emergence into the butterfly represents coming out of the darkness or pupal caterpillar stage into new creation of the adult butterfly through human metamorphosis.
I have seen My butterfly-my hope is that you will see yours!

I do not believe in the myth of rebirth, but do find the lifecycle of the butterfly to be spiritually rewarding, primarily for their beauty and peacefulness as they fly around and gather food for egg laying. I find it disturbing that people kill caterpillars through some kind of fear of losing plants or dislike for bugs in general. And spraying with insecticides is something that I would never do and people shouldn't, killing caterpillars.
My favorite butterflies, and I just recently learned that moths are butterflies, too, are Luna Moths and Cecropia Moths (I have not seen these since my teenage years when my friend caught them at night for his collections), Black Swallowtails, and Giant Swallowtails. Lunas are so unique, so translucent, and so beautiful, they are often used as examples of fairies. Cecropias are so large, colorful with eyes on them for camouflage and furry looking. Blacks have beautiful iridescent blue and red and yellow panels in their wings that make them so lovely to look at. In recent years around my navel orange tree and in my flower bed with lantana and another small butterfly attractor I see Giants come and go and may be closely related to the Tiger Swallowtail you refer to. What a joy to see Blacks and Giants often in my tiny suburban backyard while working on my books as a pleasant way to stop and just enjoy nature.
