I chose this book because of my ever ongoing curiosity about time travel. The author did not disappoint. Emily comes alive as a well rounded, albeit a little naive character who faces the challenges thrown her way in an ambitious and adventuresome fashion.
Scenes were period correct and well described. The author knew her subject well. Each chapter pulled me deeper into the story by creating questions and well as keeping me trying to figure out who the players were behind the scenes.
The writing style was witty and left me wanting to know how the story would end, which is why after I read this book, I went on to read the second and third in the trilogy. How this author kept track of who, what, when, where and tied up all loose ends, I have no idea. But it kept me intrigued and reading.
I enjoyed the storyline, the ever-pressing tensions between her and her love interest, and all the conundrums time travel presents. Though the story started slowly, I understood later it was necessary to build the foundation of the trilogy. The only time I skimmed as a reader, was the diary entries on occasion, as they seemed to be a recap of the chapter. But, it added again, to the understanding of the timeline of events and kept the reader straight on events that would be tied together later on.
Overall an interesting and attention-keeping story. I have already recommended it to several friends.
