I am so glad that you wrote this book. An excerpt would be helpful.
Since the terrifying losses of World War I and the lessons learned from repeating it in World War II, Europe has controlled its population growth through small families and prospered. However, like everywhere else that is prosperous, jobs requiring low skills in factories are declining through automation. Europe cannot absorb millions coming from Africa and the Middle East and continue to maintain solid economies. Some countries in Europe that are faced with the most illegal immigrants are already in economic trouble, like Greece.
Here in the United States, Nigerians and other Africans have come in great numbers. I personally have mentored and worked with Nigerians and other Africans and find honesty and hard-working as a primary trait to get ahead. However, our economy, in spite of high employment, is lopsided by low pay for most people while a few get very rich. Because of our remoteness from the African continent, most of the Africans here come from rich families who can afford the airfare and visas.
Unfortunately, after colonialism, many countries in Africa have succumbed to old tribal rivalries. Cruel and despotic people have taken over leadership and become dictators who drain their countries of wealth. Corruption, like you describe that you got involved in, has become a way of life. Nigeria has a serious problem between the Muslim north and the Christian south that will not be resolved easily. Oil money has made some prosper in Nigeria, but like your family, most live in utter poverty. The problems of African countries are exasperated by drought that is causing mass migrations and war.
The United States and Europe have prospered by paying newly arrived immigrants low pay for high productivity. But that cannot last if everyone fleeing their countries comes. Here in United States we are struggling with inequality that is growing. The only solution is within the countries where poverty is the greatest. I hope that your book is successful and perhaps, becomes a movie so that you will have enough wealth to go back to Nigeria and help change things for the better there. I read an article recently showing that Lagos, Nigeria is booming with entrepreneurship. Statistics show that people living in cities do not have many children. That is good. The tradition of having a large family is a serious problem in Africa and must be changed. Cities do that automatically because it is so hard to raise children there.

A poem written from a truly harrowing experience. I can't imagine facing the Sahara with a loaf of bread and a hope for finding water. I think the poem would get harder if you somehow put in it the tragic death by thirst of a fellow traveler/friend. I know that would be difficult, but these people die in the applicant should not remain anonymous we know who they are/were.
