In an era when so many are writing pessimistic books about the United States and the state of the world. Enough were pessimistic enough to elect a conservative, and backward looking, Congress and President, it's refreshing to see a book like this published. Unfortunately, there is no excerpt for the readers to determine whether or not they like your "original voice" and "fluid style."
Based on world data, every year seems to be getting better, although the media are getting so good and so competitive, that they almost "break" news before it happens, confusing and scaring people that things are worse than they really are. I remain optimistic, although I am concerned about the number of people who have negative thoughts about life in general. And I think I know where those thoughts come from… Not where they think they come from.
I agree there are cycles and I wish I could see your illustrations showing that. When I taught courses I found that diagrams and illustrations best taught concepts to my students. I also agree with you that history teaches us a great deal. It is easy to discern that conservatives, when in power, spend far more money than progressives. During conservative administrations, national debt has increased, while during progressive administrations, national debt has been reduced. This belies the commonly felt thought that progressives are for unbridled spending and big government, while conservatives are reducing government by cost-cutting.
