Eva is a spoiler. Here I was trying to figure out if this was science fiction or fantasy, mixing futuristic bull with present experience and didn't see the allegory. In spite of all the incongruenty
and seemingly petulance of Wilbur with all of his fake snobbery to get something for nothing, I completely overlooked what Eva spotted.
Five stars for this story if somehow you can bridge it over to idiots like me who read more and comprehend less.
Space barnacles? Egad! Are they edible?

I enjoyed the story...me thinks, a disguise for the dilemmas authors face with a glut of $.99 or free books on the market, and chasing the rainbow for reviews.

life has its little mysteries, like arthritis meds packaged so my arthritic fingers cannot possibly open, that's why we have grand kids, THEY are the only ones able to open the dratted bottle.

I think you should have placed this story in the humor category I laughed so much when I read. It seems like the "rules" of potluck, at least at working places, have become quite as onerous as policies and procedures. Regardless of what the food is, it appears, "freedom and the American way," translates into overeating and a trend toward fast food. Like the best way to diet is to use a push-up motion, pushing yourself away from the table, no longer participating in food orgies like Food Days, sounds like a good way to keep yourself trim and in good health.
Where I worked for 30 years, the key was "free" food. Invariably when there was food that required no investment on the part of many who showed up only to fill their plates and even, not eat there, but take the food away, seemed to be the norm. When we did have big celebrations like Christmas, everyone was required to pay money and certain self-appointed people were in charge of cooking, service and other amenities. The food at those events was always very good. Some administration members were able to influence other people by having lots of free food around whenever they had a meeting going on.
It always amazes me how the fattest people seem to be the one that light up whenever they see food and then consume mass quantities. For some people, it is booze.

You've got a quirky idea that you spin into a wildly inventive and interesting tale. I enjoyed your piece, George, although I am reluctant to read longer pieces of prose on this site. Well done. You deserve some encouragement as a new member to AD.
PS: I also liked the summary write up for your book, but couldn't leave a comment on that link.
