When I saw a grizzly in the northwest of Yellowstone Park after sleeping over night in my car, it was running away from me along the road as I started out. Not up close and personal like your experience. I do recall when my younger brothers were about eight or nine and in a pup tent with me for the night by the side of the road, a big dog came to the opening and scared them, but not me, before he ran off.
I hitchhiked only a few times in my life. Found it difficult to get rides. So when I had a car, I often picked up hitchhikers, some in Canada, and we traveled many miles together. But that was way back in the 1960-70s. Much more difficult today with all the fear engendered by the Internet and news. So I'm really interested in how you fared. You don't indicate how old you are.
In fact, your description is the same as your excerpt. Doesn't really give enough information to make someone want to read the book. I am not a book reader or book critic, but I do like to comment on new books offered here. More information provided would be useful for you getting readers.
