A good start to your fantasy novel where myth plays a major role. From my observation, the oral repeating of myths passed down from generation to generation for early people helped them understand their fears with calamities often cruelly taking loved ones away.
While I clearly sense a person (a child?) with asthma (?) in this excerpt, I might suggest that seasickness would perhaps be a more serious concern.
