Izaak Tauber, Herbert Muller, Wilhem Falk. It is important to know their names as they are the protagonists in the historical WW II novel When We Were Brave. It is also important to know their names because of who they represent: a Jewish child, an American German Pennsylvania resident and a former SS officer. The author brings to readers a precisely crafted and emotionally stirring novel in which the lives of the three characters intersect during the years from 1943 through 1945. The individual stories are told in the characters voices and readers come to know them quite well. Brought forth and masterfully presented are the inconceivable horrors that became reality in the lives of the characters as they suffered during this dark period in time. Just when it seemed things couldn't get worse, they did. It is a haunting and heart wrenching historical story with gripping characters. I will never forget this memorable book. Highly recommended.
