All excellent points consider before going to college. The last point is perhaps the best. Parents sometimes force their children to go to college when they are not interested or able to succeed there.
My undergraduate school emphasized "being able to do one thing very well." Whatever that one thing is one can make a living or even a business from it. There is always a mentoring and maturing process immersing oneself in a college environment does, that is invaluable for life.
Unfortunately, colleges have become big businesses and very, very expensive. Potential students need to prepare for that early and have a plan for not borrowing or borrowing very little to go through college.

Your article strikes home with me. My twin brother and I are first generation college educated in our entire extended family. We went to a state school rather than the state university with the promise that we would find good employment and that was basically true. We both have prospered from our savings from our work.
My brother has family. His two daughters have gone to major universities. Since wealth in families is perpetuated by inheritance, even though both of his daughters are wealthy, he has advised that the best way to ensure a savings mentality is to give stock to children rather than toys or cash that is quickly spent for every birthday, life landmark or other occasion, like inheritance.
I, on the other hand, went on for post baccalaureate education at major, well endowed, public and private institutions. I have no children and have provided well for my partner. I have decided to give a little bit to each of my graduate schools and the lion share to my alma mater where it will allow first-generation college students to get an upper hand in the challenging 21st-century job market.
