Or you may also look in you telephone book under "Numismatic" as they, and most gold dealers will purchase scrap gold, melt it, remove the impurities, then reform it into 100% certified gold ingots and sell it by the ounce.

Oh, how travel educates and enlightens us. I'm so glad you took this trip and have told us, in great detail of your journey. I know you enjoyed it very much, but I also know that it cost you a great deal to have a guided tour like this to two countries. That is unfortunate.
In 1978, thanks to a Thai friend who got us cheap tickets from New York to Bangkok, I was able to take a world tour on the cheap. The whole trip cost me $1800… Mostly for airline tickets. At each country we (after Bangkok, just me) arrived in the country and arrange local tours from our inexpensive hotels. I gained the world in the process.
Before the trip I had to go to Washington DC to pick up visas. When we arrived at the Iranian Embassy, I was rushed on through in spite of others waiting and given a visa rapidly with handshakes and smiles, "You are a teacher?" On the other hand, I had to leave my passport at the Bangladesh Embassy and wait two weeks for it to be sent back to me with a visa. Other countries like Egypt, Pakistan and the Philippines automatically gave me a two week visitor's visa.
Unfortunately, our our itinerary did not include Tehran, although it could have. After an all-night wait in the Cairo airport with cold wind coming in off the desert in January, our plane was repaired and we landed in Dubai for a brief stopover to shimmering white desert and a striking white terminal where I got off the plane and made a call to Abu Dhabi well viewing duty-free goods displayed. The city had not yet been built to the splendor you observed. But the airport was ready.
During that time, the Shah was modernizing the country to the disgust of the Moslem conservative Shiites who he beat into submission while turning a smiling face to the West. He sent thousands of promising students to United States in the schools where I studied and taught. At Marshall University there are about 30 excellent Iranian students in my classes. I especially recall a beautiful young woman with the name, Sharine Tabatabai. There is no doubt in my mind that she was from an elite family by her intelligence, command of English, and bearing. I often wondered what happened to her and others like her, educated in the United States after the Ayatollah and strict Islamic conservatism took over, ruining Iran's bid to become part of the Western world.
