Even though you have exposed your upbringing to God and others to see the complexity of it all, you have (perhaps unknowingly) mapped out a life lesson for others who may be traveling that bumpy road to forgiveness themselves. This is truly remarkable. And you have reinforced all your thoughts with Scripture. I mean this with all my being: what you have said and prayed here is, in its simplest form, a Sunday morning sermon. Connie, once again your impeccable style of entertaining the Reader, while spot-lighting human frailties, and the LORD's remedies for them, brings overflowing joy!
Especially in this season, when there tends to be a rise in depression, often wrought by the recent loss of a spouse or family member, the loss of a job, or the lack of funds to buy several and large gifts - or even the unlikeliness of receiving them for one's self - is the need to recall your Fabian's thoughts: "Perhaps it would be wise to be content with bringing smiles to their hearts as they drew near, rather than wasting his winter days dreaming of what he couldn't do."
Whatever we focus on becomes larger.. Considering others takes our minds off ourselves. Jesus told us to do unto others AS WE would have them do unto us. For He knew that godliness, with contentment, is great gain.

Roses have always been one of my favorite flowers. I have always thought of a rose's thorns as the perfect example of opposites...just as experiencing sorrow is a must if we are to know pure joy, etc... Without the bad we wouldn't appreciate the good nearly as much, and so it is with the rose...it's beauty is so far superior to the thorns.

Let me wipe my tears so I can see to post this....this one really touched me. You have captured this so beautiful. I know we shouldn't complain, because even though our suffering is hard and sometimes we think that we can't bare it...his was so much worse. What if he hadn't have suffered it for us??? Where would we be? You've given the reader so much to think about. This would be a beautiful write to have before one goes into surgery or even for a procedure where you are sedated. It is very uplifting....

It's a little tricky to figure out, because your poem does not address the specifics, but from the way you commented, I believe the offer you made for a perfect downsized home was accepted and you are very happy. Forgive me if I am wrong.
Recently my sister, building their perfect retirement home close to their earlier dream home, was happily surprised, to sell the larger home before it was ever on the open market for the price she wanted. Almost a miracle, because she expected it would be on the market a long time and that they would have to lower the price to sell.

How beautiful! It’s prayers like this, prayed by wives, mothers, and friends across America in its youth that made America such a great Nation. General Patton made the statement that the prayers of wives and mothers during World War II did more to win the war than all the weapons and ammunition used throughout the entire war. When I was in Vietnam, my mother sent me a prayer, scribbled out on a piece of composition notebook paper. I carried it with me the entire time I was there. Then, after I came home, I continued to carry it in my billfold for years. Finally, near Christmas one year, without my knowing it, my oldest son took it out of my billfold and had his wife cross-stitch the entire prayer. What my mother had written on that paper was falling apart and almost unreadable. He and my nephew made a frame for it and framed it for me that Christmas. Can you imagine how pleased I was with it? Well, of course you know.

Ron, sorry it took me a while to write back. Most of Jesus' life story is told in the Bible. Matthew John and Luke are full of narration about His life, especially the 3 main years of His ministry.
There is not much told about His youth, except that He lived in a house, which is where the visit from the Magi actually took place. He was probably about two at the time. He grew up with His mother Mary. It seems that His foster-father Joseph died sometime before Jesus was crucified, because He asked John to watch over His mother from then on. He went to the temple at age 12, and surprised His family by staying on and teaching the elders there. When they came looking for Him, He again joined the family, until He was about 30. I'm not a scholar, but these things are apparent when you read the Bible. I especially love Isaiah chapter 53, and there are many other truths about Jesus Christ in the Bible.I hope you will get to know Him and follow Him, as so many others have from His day till now.

Your poetry always has perfect rhythm, and when I read it, the sound is very pleasing to my ear. In a way, it’s almost like I’m hearing Longfellow’s “Hiawatha.” Too, as I read it over and over, I keep hearing a song by The Oak Ridge Boys called, “He did It All For Me.” As you can see, I love everything about this poem. Finally, I must say it is very tender and loving, just the way Jesus gave his life so that we may live in peace and harmony throughout eternity.

Like children who have no siblings or friends create imaginary friends, for those who are despondent or feel beset upon by life, loneliness, illness or other infirmities, especially as they get older, like the idea of an all caring, totally nonjudgmental god. Someone they can turn to either by talking, writing or singing. Never getting a response. But feeling much better for having gotten something off their chest like a confession or a wish that sometimes, coincidentally, actually happens.
Throughout my life I've had wondrous things happen by chance, many. Bad things have also happened, by chance, many. But I know where my strength lies and it is deep within me and the knowledge I have gathered. That's all I need. A dog would be nice as a companion that I could get unconditional love from, but I think it would be hard on the dog's life to live with me. They need to be freer than I could offer. I really hate to see them suffer so in confinement that most people make them endure. At least gods can't be confined because they are imaginary, thank goodness!

I love the way you have described how God speaks to you during times of “helplessness, despondency, and dread”. Brought a tear to my eye. Beautifully written tribute to our little friends who die so soon. My little Jazz died agonizingly when I was helpless to help him from an attack from a big black lab mix. The second time in a year. It is my partner harder when she had to clean up all the blood he bled for hours before his death, crying all the time.

As I told Lefty after reading his poem just before yours, we should have euthanasia like we have for our pets. For almost every one of us who doesn't die suddenly, we reach a time when, if we are of sound mind, we should be able to simply just go to sleep rather than be forced into constant rounds of doctoring, pain, assisted living or worse, a nursing home for five months in the hospital like my father. Three years of pain and agony like my mother. I'm ready to go now while I still have some assets to give to my heirs, caregivers and charities. And especially, free my partner of 29 years from the increasing agony of taking care of me and what should be her golden retirement years.

The truths always hurt. It's a self issue and not an issue of the speaker. It only hurts when you know it's the truth.
Having said that, I also admit that we need to say much kinder words to others during this pandemic time. I've just realized one of our poet friends is gone. She left us unexpectedly. No one knew she had been really sick. Her death has taken me by surprise as she was rather a young poet. I can't remember how many times I passed by her posts or comments and thought perhaps I should send her a message to ask how she was, but later had not done it. Imagine my surprise when I woke up yesterday to find out she was gone. It was so unexpected and heartbreaking!

If one finds anger and reprisal upon hearing another's words, we need to examine where that anger is coming from. Are we relying on an external source for our strong belief? Or are we truly disturbed by that set of words for what they represent.
Being awfully careful with what we say is succumbing to the cult that may rule us.
We are more alike than we are different. When we feel we are different, we may have a problem.

You are speaking to a select group of people here—the one wherein I belong. And we can expect to go through gloomy days brought on by the death of a loved one, a child moving far away from us, someone says something to hurt us—whatever the reason may be that causes physical or emotional suffering. Christ died on the cross for all the sins of this world and to give us eternal life. As long as we are in the body we now have, we are human, with human characteristics. And as long as we are in this body, we will sin, be sad and lonely at times, feel physical and emotional pain, etc. however, if we will only trust Him to be our Savior, we have the hope of one day possessing a new life. As the song goes:
“He could have called ten thousand angels to destroy the world and set him free
He could have called ten thousand angels but he died alone for you and me…”

This sounds so much like my father. Every day around four or five o’clock he would begin telling my mother that he wanted to go home. Of course, he wanted to go to the home of his childhood. Sometimes after I came home from work, my mother would call and ask if I would come and see if I could do something with him. About all I could do was get him in the car and take him for a ride. One time he asked me, “Who are you, anyway?” I said, “I’m David. I’m your youngest son.” To this he replied, “Well, I didn’t know that.” These drives and other diversions went on for years and years. There were times he was hilariously funny. And I don’t believe it was wrong to laugh at the funny things he said. My oldest brother worried himself to death that he would take the path of our father. Actually, he was stricken with the same illness, only he was much worse than our father. I fear that I may be the next victim. The signs are there. Pray for me, Connie

The older I get, the more difficult it is to concentrate on the goodness of our Heavenly Father. I don’t really know how to explain how I feel. There are times when I am alone with Him, promises are made that I will be more attentive to my duties as a Christian, then I go about the business of daily life, soon forgetting the promises I made perhaps only hours earlier. I am swallowed up with living in today’s world, sorrowful that life is nothing like it once was. Yesterday evening my wife and I went to the mall. At one point, I was by myself, and I passed through the children’s department at Macy’s. I looked at the many tiny outfits hanging on the racks and wondered what kind of life the children who would wear those little outfits would have. I wondered what kind of people they would grow up to be. These thoughts have been with me throughout the day, and my heart is heavy for these children and the kind of life that’s in store for them. Connie, I, too, love the place you talked about in your poem. It is such a comforting place—one where I need to go more often. Thank you for this beautiful, inspiring piece. I apologize with getting carried away with my thoughts.

It is certainly time we grew up and assumed responsibility for what we are doing to our home, our earth. So many rely on their childhood faith to explain things, saying that they will just do nothing and let God do what is prophecied. In other words, let our parents take the blame for our behavior. Convenient, but does not solve our problems that will take the best science there is, theory or not, to overcome our excess often justified as required by our faith.

You made me recall those days when we played "Cowboys and Indians." Nobody wanted to be an Indian because, of course, the Indians always lost. Fortunately, Boy Scouts and the highest honor, the Order of the Arrow, taught me that there was great wisdom in the Indian way of life with nature. Something that has never left me.
It is truly unfortunate that making Indians as bloodthirsty scary characters at Fourth of July parades, along with all the other covering up and altering of history by traditional rituals and even textbooks, is often believed as the truth of character by those who end their education with frightful scares like that.
While I could look at your poem with delight, I am a bit concerned. The words "political correctness," should not be used as ammunition for making bad behavior trivial.

As children, we all feared something, but in reality, it's nothing that we should be feared of at all.
When I was a young child we always went out to explore a back alley where there were no street lights at all. It was complete darkness except for the lights that shone through our flashlights. We were told that someone (a woman) had committed suicide by hanging herself in one of those trees, and we all went out to explore if her spirit would surface. It was scary every time we stepped into that back alley, but we would still welcome the unknown through our fears. Children always do the darndest thing. LOL!!!

There couldn’t have been a better time to be a kid than the ‘40s and ‘50s. The carefree beauty of that time period was the fun we experienced in being scared halfway out our mind. When I was 9 or 10 my parents fixed up an old building abou 50 ft. from the house. One cold night my brother and I and our cousin were spending the night in this building. Late in the night I woke up freezing. I decided to go into our main house. When I was halfway between the house and the building, my brother asked in a devilish voice, “What if something was to reach out and grab you about now?” Well, I froze in place. Couldn’t move. I could barely speak. But I did manage to scream, waking my father, who came to my rescue. As it turned out, my scariest moment of childhood happened to be the funniest of all. You have done a wonderful job with this poem, and at the same time, you’ve brought back a moment in time from my own past. Thank you, Connie. I always love everything you write.

Others have stolen the usual superlatives. But I felt a real empathy and understanding of the little ones that come to us straight from their mothers' guidance and sustenance. They are little shaky at first, but soon learn how to tear up the house with their mischievous behavior.
I think I was a good parent to my feisty little Jazz. I'm sure glad I didn't have him as a puppy or I might have resented those bad habits.

Like old shoes, love grows more comfortable with age. I'm finally experiencing that myself, and your family is a good example of the truth of the matter. I recall my parents 62 years together. Marrying just as the world was at war, practically on a whim, and then finding out how economically difficult marriage was with twin babies to take care of. I recall all the arguments, mostly about money in those young turbulent years. Later, it was about sharing duties in the household after my father retired. They changed and became very much partners in life, doing nearly everything together.

With folks such as you lifting one’s name up in prayer, I’m sure everything will turn out to be all right when everything is said and done. Anything is possible with the Heart Healer. Pray for my sister who lost her 58 year old son a year ago in November. I realize it takes time, but her heart is still broken afresh daily. Sometimes when we talk on the phone, she tells me she has cried all day. She and I are very close, and my heart breaks for her.

Your poem reminded me of two things. I recall going to my sweetheart's birthday with all of her girlfriends about 11 or 12 and discovering that the primary love the girls had was Rock Hudson. Boy, were they in for a surprise!
And, my mother and father. He was 21, just out of CCC camps because he quit school in his senior year and couldn't get a job. Now, in 1941, unable to join the Army for medical reasons, he was doing odd jobs like setting pins at night to pay for his new car that he couldn't afford to pay the payments on, a 39 Buick sedan. She was 17 and graduated from high school with the knowledge that she wouldn't go to college because she was already pregnant with twins (my brother and I).
So, they rented a shack behind a farmer's barn. Dad sold the Buick and bought older used cars. Mom was the monetary genius juggling bills for my spendthrift father, and they were able to retire when he was 62 and she was 57.

Connie, this is a beautiful poem for so many who feel lost and alone! I was one of those people after my first wife went to Heaven so young. I was so lonely even though I had two daughters and a dog who was a son-of-a-gun! With prayer and fellowship from others in our Bible study, God was able to turn a life of stale bread into a lovely life of milk and honey! Amen!

What a beautiful illustration of our Heavenly Father always being there to catch us in the event that we fall. I never hunted a deer
Not with a rifle nor bow and arrow.
They are too stately and too majestic
I never met a man with those qualities.
