“395 and a Wake Up” follows a naďve 18 year old, Bobby Murphy, who joins the US Marines and is then shipped off to Vietnam at the height of the Vietnam War in 1968.
Author Terry Sato draws on his experiences as a Marine with Shore Party in 1968/69 in Vietnam and uses personal insight to hook the reader from page 1. “395” is a true page turner and I read this book quickly as I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next to Chicago, (Murphy) Tex, Corporal Greene, Goodman and many others. Terry uses military and 60’s lingo to make you feel right there, in the bush with the squad. The reader is along for the ride whether its burning latrines, sweeping mines or dodging enemy fire as Murphy grows into an angry, cynical young man.
I recommend “395 and a Wake Up” to anyone who enjoys adventure, war, or coming of age stories and I look forward to Terry’s future work.

My God in Heaven, your short story is similar and not so far apart to my book, FULL CIRCLE! My Vietnam Veteran, Tommy Moon, told me stories so vicious, I cried all the way home as I couldn't put aside the horrendous atrocities placed on him, his friends and other grunts shoved in a non-declared war. The graphics I wrote is embeded into my mind forever and I understand the PTSD that all the veterans are experiencing. I pray for all the soldiers who are in Iraq as I know first hand about my young nephew who won't admit the trauma he is having and will have for years to come.
Your short story is graphic but so true.

My cousin Mart Goodling is a marine always and served when I don't know but he gets a marine reunion together each year. Last year was Alaska Cruise, this year is Colorado tour. He is so proud to always be a marine, as I know you are too. Good poetry on this one for me.

"I curse the truce" -- That line hit like a hard slap, unexpected and all the more powerful because of that simple fact. I'm sure soldiers in our present day war, and in any war for that matter, could relate to such a moment.
