Congratulations on your manual that you have created your journey from sportswriter to novelist. Many times, people that I talk to say that they would like to write novels like I do. For many this is just a pipe dream. Some actually start writing. I know of at least two novelists that I helped edit their books for, gave up after writing the first. I believe a book like yours can be helpful in getting people want to write novels over the hump and actually writing them.

I can really feel this , I am surrounded around beautiful brownstones in brooklyn. Historic buildings, beautiful and well kept. Bedford Styvesant the culture of brooklyn, continue to write. It is an honor to live here.

I love it! Watching kudzu take over much of the area west of Atlanta was a scary proposition. Best of luck with your hardcover edition. Hopefully not adding to the hysteria now rampant in the country over science-fiction turned into reality by fake stories of perils that don't exist.

Thank you for sharing with me the life and times of Terry Kay. Makes me wish I had stayed in Atlanta where I might have met you and certainly been more stimulated than I have been here in Houston, only finding a writers group through an AD brief connect about 2012.
I can see you are well influenced by him and his work. It's always good to have mentors. I gave one of my novels to Larry McMurtry, author of Lonesome Dove and longtime professor at Rice University. But we didn't have time to talk. And during my years at TSU, Edward Albee, author of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, taught in nearby University of Houston. I never got to meet with him or any of the literary people there.

I spent three wonderful years grading creative writing in test answers and term papers for my MBA students at Atlanta University that went defunct and was rescued by Clark, three years later. Just a stones throw from Emory. I did note that you left the plural off of your six book[s].
I took science and technical courses for my career, and spent 50 years there, mostly writing for others like the US government, to meet their requirements. But probably the best course I ever took was a creative writing course as an elective in my senior year in college.
Your book appears to be much-needed by so many authors here who write of their writer's block. But I've never had writer's block. I am highly motivated right now to write two books and finish them. And, and thinking that I will have to keep writing after that because I will keep getting ideas that I just can't pass up!

Thompson on...A life changing visit to a former rice plantation slave cabin (Short Story) - 10/25/2020 10:02:34 AM
As I read, based on your childhood experience and the epiphany that you had as you visited that slave cabin, I could not feel it the way you did. My ancestors, thankfully, came from the North and my great-great-grandfather, Nelson Hull and his five brothers were blacksmiths from Wisconsin during the Civil War.
I recall visiting two slave cabins moved to Stone Mountain around 1980. And remember how small and bleak they were with no means for heating and cracks in the log structure. And then, nearby was a large outdoor kitchen from the main plantation house (there was none) where a smiling Black woman baked bread and gave us fresh muffins, seemingly showing how wonderful it was, for the owners, to have others cooking for them.
All the while, from the mountainside above, carved in stone, the leaders of the Confederacy looked down on the remnants of slave life.
More recently, in 2012, we happened upon a festival at a plantation in Louisiana. After the Civil War, it became an artist community where Blacks were free to live communally and produce art. But the band playing zydeco in the Cajun tradition was of mixed ancestry.
I believe firmly that things will change as more and more, people of mixed blood enter the political arena and change things forever for equal opportunity without prejudice.

My pen never seems empty. I can sit down and write garbage easily every day. What I don't do very well is critically and religiously edit. Although I proof very well after at least three reads.
Almost every writing guru out there tells people to write their heart out. Unfortunately, some never reach traditional publishing standards.
I'm very aware of the kudzu threat. Wrote a humorous poem about it. The three years I lived in Mableton and taught business classes at Atlanta University, I was afraid that the Douglas County kudzu was going to come and cover my new house over like doomsday!

WRITERS that write regularly must have a routine otherwise too many things will get in the way of your creativity, Julius is correct one hundred percent. Without a routine the creative writer is bound to flounder. So keep a journal every day and set aside a block of time to write.
I believe the best writers must read...read...read! Chances are if you don't read often you will not be a good writer. Reading teaches writing and writing well means reading frequently as I am sure Julius would agree.

I saw the incident on tv. Not only was the older man shoved quite violently by a young, burly man, he was left there on the concrete as the entire police unit marched away. How much courage does it take to help someone to his feet who was just attacked by one of their own while they were watching? The shover needs to feel the power of a face full of knuckles pummel him to the ground.

I'm sure the mayor will. Our mayor, here in Houston balanced the line between police force and public protest very well. Our police chief marched with the protesters.
Thanks to someone's cell phone, the violence against the 75-year-old man was recorded and broadcast. I worked closely with our University Police Department over many years. There is a tendency for people with criminal tendencies to enter police forces under false pretense. And a certain number of police have a tendency towards using their authority as a way of bullying others. Over the years, many of our officers were fired, and then later, hired by other police forces needing trained officers. Some were even handcuffed and taken off to jail. Fortunately, like in society, bad apples are a small proportion of the largely law-abiding and peaceful citizenry.

Yes, there are a lot of parallels between today and the 60s. A lot of good came out of that turmoil. Most forgot that it was more violent than today. Back in the 60s it was assassinations. Today it's mass shootings learned from what the cult of Al Qaeda taught us.
When I see people long for the "good old days," I see people growing senile and forgetting their prejudices and violence that was condoned or swept under the rug. I think today, these insults that can't seem to go away come to the fore much more quickly because of technology and social media.
We all came out of Africa and our skin color and facial features are a result of our living in isolated environments for a long period of time, adapting to those environments for our mere survival. Survival requires intelligence. We are a rainbow of colors. We are all intelligent. We must use that intelligence and not proven wrong ideologies and prejudices that can't seem to go away because we think that dark (night) is bad and the light (day) is good. Our survival on this small planet requires both to work together in harmony.

This article has a strange characteristic to it. From the title, I would expect that you explain why Julius Thompson [I, the author] writes. But then, it jumps off into the direction of why "you" should write. A different article altogether. Finally, it has strong elements of self-promotion… "Read my books." That turns me off. You should let the reader, while reading your article, make that decision.

I would not classify this as a piece of fiction, hence it is not a story, not really. Why write or Why I write, those are two very profound questions. Julius has tapped into the answers for him. Surely the answer to that question is different for everyone.
I bet Julius could write an article about Jumpstarting Your Inner Novelist, in fact I know he could. That sounds like a wonder task. What do you think, J?

What creates the mind of someone who would insinuate himself into a loving church membership and then have such hatred to do such a deed?
Your article resonates that love, forgiveness and nonviolence is much more powerful than hatred and violence. Black people, particularly of the segregated black churches, learned way back from slavery times when they were not allowed to even worship, that a mild, nonviolent approach to the most heinous of acts was the only way to survive. To survive and thrive while the haters wilt and die.
