Not yet having read the book -- only the much-too-short excerpt -- I will say that ANY material on the utter futility and bloody heartbreak of the Korean War is a VERY important lesson for any American to study. The Korean War veterans are buried much deeper than Vietnam War vets in the "let's just forget about it" mentality of an American society that has become the victim of its own cultural attention deficit disorder. Kudos to Campbell for dredging through all the nightmares (and daymares) to write this book and get it published.
From a Vietnam War Era vet -- son of a career Gyrene Korean War vet -- to Robert Campbell: a definite "attaboy" on this effort.

Bob Campbell's book is truly a gripping story. Although we never met in person, Bob & I became e-mail buddies and he encouraged me to write a novel based on my own unique experiences during the Korean War. (I was in the Army Security Agency and attached to the 1st Marine Division) He encouraged me via e-mail as I wrote the novel. Sadly, Bob died unexpectedly on November 27, 2002. I had just informed him a few days before his death I had completed the 1st draft of my book. In his honor, I renamed one of the good-guy characters in my book as Sergeant Campbell. I regret that he didn't get to read my book which is just now going to Publish America for publication in the near future. Semper Fi. Rest in Peace Good Buddy

Based on the reviews and commentary I am ordering this book NOW. I served with 217th Med Coll Co (Sep) on Airstrips from Pusan to Wejonbu(sp?). I did not serve as a combat medic but evacuated many wounded from all services and from several different nations. My hat is off to to Campbell. Cpl, Army NG, 217th Med Coll Co (Sep) May 1951 - May 1952.

I too served in the Korean war, from the time period of 1950-1954, but I was in the Navy. The book is an excellent way of describing how we went through the war. I feel that you have done a remarkable job of expressing that feeling, in the way that all of us 17-18 year olds dealt with the war.

Your book brought back all the horros and yet all the friends and good memories as well. I fought for the fortress as well. I was also in many other "outpost" battles. War is hell, but we move on so that those who gave all may live on in us. Semper Fi.

This sounds like a must read book and I plan to get it. Being in the 1st Battaion, 11th Marines supporting the 5th Marines, I have been writing my experiences from a peripheral viewpoint in Korea - no blood and

i went there after the war but was in place in sept.1954. i have ordered it . the excerpts were what i would expect from a vet. very good. the younger generation needs to know what these men and women went through to keep our freedom. god blee you and god bless america

Bob Campbell tells it exactly as it was for most of us who grew up in the Korean War.
He sent me an autographed copy, and it stands beside James Jones and Ernest Hemingway on my bookshelf.
I take my Korean War Project cap off to Bob. On the crown of that cap is the logo:"I REMEMBER KOREA."
The narrative is as gripping as sitting in ambush waiting for a Chicom patrol to enter the trap. Bob captured
me in the same shocking way the Gaiser took his prisoner. The narrator captured the way we gravel crunchers talked and felt.
No "Command Diary" or "After Action Report" has ever truly caught the feel, the smell,and the grit of our battles as well as
Bob Campbell's novel has. When drunk on a Corpsman's ration of pure alcohol, we sang: "I'm over in Korea Now/ just fightin' for my life/before I'd go to war again/ I'd send my darlin' wife/It's a bloody war."
I shall send copies of IN THE SHADOW OF GLORY to my surviving buddies.

I thought that the book was great. It's about time someone tells the tale. My Father fought in Korea, assaut and seizure of Inchon, Seoul and Chosin Campaign. I know that if he was alive he would appreciate you insights of the struggles and bravey of these young Marines.

Thought this was great. It gives me an idea of what my Dad went through. He was a true Marine until the day he died. He never much talked about Korea though but liked showing us all his pictures. Now my two brothers have them both as a gift from my mother from last christmas. I will have to get this book.

An engaging, gritty style in a genre that demands real-life experience for maximum effect. As I studied the Korean War last year, I soon realised why they refer to it as the 'forgotten war'. Your perspective puts the conflict in it's proper context; a forgotten war that was no less a human scar than any other.

I would love to comment how excellently this piece is written. As a young woman that came from a very long list of men in my life that have served our country and not being able to serve myself but very active with volunteering at our local veteran club I have met some of the greatest people (Our Veterans)who as have stated that same thing I wish I could go there and fight for our country again(as most have already served during a war once)or just go there to help with what ever needed to be done. When reading this peice I cried in for this veteran's pain and helplessness.
Would just like to say THANK YOU to all veterans who have served our country because with out you we would not have our rights and freedom today.

I know exactly where the character was coming from. My husband, disabled, heart problems, housebound, retired Marine, watch that scene unfold over and over again on TV. I think none got their hearts ripped more on 9/11 than those who fought for our freedom.

Haunting! I found myself here with tears in my eyes as I read. I know such men and I think that the author must have also. This story gripped my insides and I admit I was astounded. Great work!
