Lester Miller is a homicide detective with the Chicago Police Department, and, after 14 years of steadfast service, he needs a change. The scene has gotten old for him, names and faces are starting to run together, and, to make matters worse, his love life is...well...it isn't. His ex-wife has moved onto another man, and, of all people, her new lover is someone Lester knows is rife with deep, dangerous secrets - but she refuses to listen to take any of his advice to leave her new paramour alone.
Longing for a fresh start, he accepts a position with the FBI - but before he can get away, an old friend comes calling for a favor. Sonny Newsome, owner of a struggling private detective agency, needs Lester's help to solve a new case that so far has offered more questions than answers. Lester is loathe to get involved, but given that Sonny once saved his life by taking three bullets meant for him, Lester has little choice.
The case involves an apparent suicide, but the deeper the men dig for clues, the more questions arise - and the more unwitting connections they make to a greater mystery more threatening and potentially dangerous than they realize.
Once Is Never Enough is an impressive addition to the world of suspense. Shivers does a solid job of presenting believable characters in realistic situations that transpire everyday. Whether we like it or not, the world of politics is a shadowy one at best, and those of us who live our lives outside the realm of its typical machinations would often be shocked to know the real goings-on behind the scenes. In her compelling, fast-moving tale, Shivers delivers a excellent commentary of political intrigue at its worst, a la Devil In A Blue Dress. With enough diversions to keep you guessing til the very end, Once Is Never Enough is guaranteed to entertain.
