And you are one lucky guy being able to utilize your spouse's fine tuned senses when it comes to smell, sound, and taste. I've been trying to get Mean Tall Woman to do that for me for years, to no avail. For some reason, she thinks that all of the many things I want her to smell, listen to, or taste, are disgusting!

I get the feelings behind this article, I really do. I have worked hard for animal welfare most of my life. It's a hard go and I have faced many dark days of pessimism and cynicism. Keep your head up. Like I said, I feel your message but may I make a suggestion? Watch your spelling and the look of your writing. The bold font in big letters doesn't make the message more important. It actually makes it harder to read. When you have a strong message, you need to be clear and precise and that goes for not just the message itself but the way it looks and it's readability. Think of an article as though it it is word art. Proper paragraph breaks, sentence structure and spelling make the true message shine.

Reading this over, I am reminded of the tremendous value to be found in various philosophic schools of thought (such as Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Epictetus, Aurelius, Kierkegaard, etc.)when the unanticipated vagaries of life become a bit too onerous. In particular, I've found that keeping a copy of Marcus Aurelius' 'Meditations' close at hand is a tremendous comfort, when the burden of life becomes too finely focused within us. The ancient Stoics certainly had something worth considering, especially when one is, as am I, a huge fan of Artur Schopenhauer (misunderstood by many, as he is), whose philosophy paralleled much of the Stoic frame of reference. Jasmin, I commend you for your concerns and your great compassion. Few others, it seems, can visualize how it must be for the animals kept. I am happy to say that strict laws here have been enforced that see to the health and nutrition of such animals. Anybody raising unhealthy animals either has no market for them or the inspectors close them down. The ones who fall through the cracks are persons who keep five or fewer female dogs, and, thus, don't have to be state or federally licensed. There is another side to the coin that beyond health and nutrition, the dog is an animal meant to run, and have exercise. I feel just as badly at those people who chain a dog, and forget him. In my younger times, I got a puppy dog, an Alsatian Shepherd Dog, from a friends litter (he didn't give them to anybody he wasn't sure of) and it was my companion for 19 years. No puppy-mills then, and if they was one we didn't know about. Stray cats and dogs weren't around...yet, until some entrepreneur dreamed that ubiquitous "ask Daddy for a puppy as a Christmas present" And, in a society of use and throw away...nothing should surprise anybody when people by any means pursue the "American dream" of a fast buck.

Far too many, I fear, especially these very sad days - and many of them are our so called 'leaders.'
Here in the U.S., we cannot rely on our politicians to act humanely in shutting down these profitable puppy mills; and I truly hope you have better luck doing that in Canada.
Here, we must continue our efforts to educate the masses about these abysmal puppy mills, and continue our attempts to get people to Adopt Dogs from Shelters, not Buy them from puppy mill pet stores.

I am pleased with our President's zeal to get us back on course, but I am also aware that he is only a human- Only Jesus Christ is totally fit to rule America and the rest of this world. I really hate to see little creatures given as Easter gifts and then treated so badly by those that receive them. I don't see little chicks mentioned. Not many city folks can keep them in their yards until they grow up to be edible in about six weeks.
On the other hand, the reason the rabbit is so prolific (the mouse as well) is that the food chain requires herbivores to feed the carnivores of which humans are one. Personally, I prefer squirrel over rabbit. And, I never killed a squirrel (humanely, I hope) that I didn't eat, or like for that matter.

That was some dream… Giving them a taste of their own medicine. Reminded me once again of that short film I saw of a greedy fisherman catching striped bass and throwing them on the shore. When he ran out of food in his lunchbox, he saw a candy bar in the sand and greedily picked it up and took a bite, only to have a huge hook in his mouth and a long line pulling him across the beach into the ocean. Like your poem and your dream, a very scary reversal of fortune.

You raise an age-old question. We all come from a brutal past where every animal was very game for our very survival. Certain practices intended to provide food and fur like baby seal hunting got started out of necessity and have grown into institutions. The problem with these institutions is that they have an impact on animal populations and the growing concern for endangered and threatened species, including the rights of animals not to be treated brutally either in captivity or when being killed for harvest.
I read recently that the fur trade and fur fashion is back in vogue among the elite around the world. For Inuit people and others surviving on fur for part of their income both in Canada and in the United States regulation seems to have actually helped populations rebound, especially in the lower 48. I do know that alligators, almost wiped out by over hunting, have made a substantial come back with careful limits made during a short season every year. In my home state of Wisconsin, many deer are harvested every year, but the deer population is much higher than it was in 1900.
That said, brutal and unnecessary practices need to stop and bringing them to everyone's attention like your poem is the right thing to do.

We still rely heavily on the natural world for our food. The more we destroy it for short-term profit, the less we will have to feed ourselves. Sport hunting is an ego game. Hunting animals for their ivory, for pets or for false medical ingredients is a real travesty driving several major species to extinction.

I don't know about Canada, but medical research, as well as product research, in the United States has always used animals to do research studies as part of the protocol before medicines and possibly dangerous agents are used on humans. Over the years I've seen many exposés of terrible, torturous experiments done on animals. Of course, medical labs, and especially profit-making cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies, try to keep their labs secret because of the possible public backlash.
I remember 40 years ago having to kill puppies that our stray dog continued to have at regular intervals because she wasn't splayed and roamed freely from our rural farmhouse. Later, my mother opted to give the puppies to the local hospital for heart research leading to better treatment for heart disease like my father suffered from.
People tend to be offended when they see what they perceive as their pets being mistreated. Organizations like PETA are continually revealing atrocities committed on animals from food production to circuses and displays like Sea World. Our attitudes are gradually changing toward using animals for our purposes, especially when they are inhumane or destructive to the environment.
There are many reasons for killing animals. We all rely on animals being killed if we eat meat. But what we must remember is not to decimate species for food or other purposes (quack medicine) and to kill humanely without torture.
As a result of activism like this, protocol for research is being changed to work on cell tissue and DNA (although embryonic stem cells from placenta are being objected to) rather than animal subjects prior to being tested on humans.

It seems very strange that some law was broken that required a legal battle over what was obviously just an act of kindness. Justice is blind.
But recently, the proliferation of cell phones with video capability and the power of social media/petitions to get the attention of both the public and the perpetrators, are doing amazing things when it comes to setting things right.
When something stupid is being done and got away with because it isn't in the public eye, putting it in the public eye usually gets results--very quickly.

A cry to the uninformed to beware the wolf in sheep's clothing. It is so easy for sheep to go to slaughter thinking they will be sheared, but only fleeced and then abandoned to die in the street.
Beware of "cost-cutting" and "America first" isolationist simple prescriptions for complex problems. I just read a letter to coal miners from a former coal miner and coal mining job/cost cutting manager. He clearly stated that, in spite of the rhetoric, coal mining jobs are never coming back and have been disappearing for many years in spite of the tradition. Coal mining companies initially imported many immigrants to do the dirty, dangerous and low-paid work that has now become a way of life long gone.
I am from Wisconsin, initially one of the most progressive states in the Union and the source of the Republican Party. Once again like in the 1950s, conservatism in the form of McCarthyism is at foot in the state and the nation. Depicting other countries as enemies rather than allies in solving the world's great problems.
We need to heed your call and throw the scoundrels out.

I agree totally with your last stanza. In the 21st century we are growing up fast. No longer will we tolerate ignorance or hatred to prevail when it comes to gender issues.
For the last five or so years I was given (as a sort of punishment for being disabled and complaining about my treatment) a subordinate named Robert who acted quite strange and was hard to get focused on his work, although when he wanted to, did quite well. He seemed overly concerned about being accepted. Just before we were both fired under the guise of budgetary restraints, Robert started to act more overtly around our university campus. People came to me and asked me, "what is going on with Robert?" I didn't know and didn't care much about his behavior didn't affect his work.
About six months after we left work, Robert emailed me and told me that he is name was now Rachyl. That's how I learned what his problem was in addition to finding out that at eight years of age he tried to go back into his house and save his mother who burned in it.
We need to grow up and allow people with gender problems (including those who are gay) to live their lives without harassment and laws restricting them from doing what is natural for all of us like going to the bathroom. Ignorance and bigoted beliefs lead to intolerance, hatred and stupid laws. We need to tear down those laws and give everyone the chance to be free without ridicule.

A stark appraisal of the state we have elected ourselves to. May we understand what we have done in reaching this point. We must always be wary of creeping trends towards the values that this country was built on and stands for.
Unfortunately, this country of 350 million or so would be totally capable of taking in the billions that would wish to live here. So, we are tending to take in the privileged of the world: the rich, families of the already here, and those of intelligence seeking higher education. We are conveniently forgetting that so many of our ancestors left oppressive rulers with nothing but the clothes on their backs and booked steerage on ships to a land where opportunity seemed endless. We now want to cast off refugees. We have no good jobs to offer to anyone without special skills. We are fleeing our own country in record numbers to countries where our money gets us more for less.
In other words, we need to do some introspection before we just use knee-jerk decrees and restrictive laws to make our country "again" what it never really was.

So very well stated. Upon with great passion and purpose.
We Europeans came to this North American land a scant 400 years ago, longing to be free and to benefit from the rich resources that we wrested from the native people as though it were ours to take. We never regretted it. We revel in it. One great big land grab.
And then, those in money and power use bribery and coercion to get the government to grant them access to public lands where they can continue to rape and pillage under the guise of "deregulated" free enterprise. Throughout this great country (and the world) can be found deep scars and polluted landscapes left by those who freely took under "free enterprise," but never gave back are even cleaned up. The mess becomes a government problem paid for by the people. We need to sue them. They need to pay for every bit of damage done, no exceptions.
We know the right thing to do. Germany knows the right thing to do and is going ahead with renewable energy at a rate that will put the United States to shame for hanging on to dirty fossil fuels under the guise of "creating jobs" that are no longer there with large automated operations. It's a scam that those of us that know (the intelligentsia) need to expose and stop.
We've harmed our earth enough in the name of profit. We have become filthy rich for a few and dirt poor for most. When are we going to come to our senses?

Yes, we are an arrogant lot, thinking that we have dominion over the earth and all its inhabitants, when we behave it ignorant and stupid ways that we can't take back.
It takes a certain amount of arrogance to survive in today's society, but it also takes intelligence. When you let ignorance and stupidity to rule what we do, we do a disservice to our stature as intelligent beings. I certainly do hope we wise up before it's too late.

I only experienced a sleepless night once before I was paralyzed, fifty years ago. That was the night after I walked 50 miles for President Kennedy. Since then, muscle cramps have become my friend. It's only recently that I've had to take some medication, unless you consider baclofen, that I've had to take for twenty years.
One thing's for sure, our certain death will cure our pain.

“We be dead soon.” Comes from a civil rights era poem that I admire for its honesty and directness. Much of our creativity (and fear) comes from lack of knowledge, especially of the future and things that might hurt us (or go bump in the night). As you pointed out, we even fear losing love.
All this comes from our primitive instincts, burned into our reptile brain that keeps us on the path of survival, and sometimes, rather destructive behavior.
I'm for throwing off all the fear and doing the best we can to create utopia before we are, “dead too soon.”

There is so much cruelty and neglect -- not only of dogs, but of innocent children as well. God hears their pleas. Surely, each person will be held accountable for surely, God loves them and treasures each life.

It’s just a dog, was his reply,
What’s with all the cry and fuss!
I very sadly hear this more and more these extremely sad days, as I attempt to help our earthly neighbors "It's just a dog!" It's just a cat!" It's just a bird!"
I think our link to God has already been broken by our callousness and our cruelty to His Creation these extremly sad days. And when someone's prayers to God are now not answered, I can already picture God saying: "Why should I help? It's just a man!"

mankind can be... I am a gentle soul who loves
nature and all the angel animals given to us...
There time will come sadly (these cruel individuals)
and although this angers me, my heart could never hurt
another soul... I do know there are many more less gentle
than myself...

It's a sorry shame anyone has to suffer Prejudices
it's a very ugly ignorance inside the heart of those
who spawn it. It's learned behavior. Your poems are
pinpoints & I think especially helpful to express
the other side of a prejudice...I think we all deal
with some sort of prejudice along the way. I grew up
being taught to fear African Americans that they were
dangerous, and thief's. But all the while people of my
color sexually abused me stealing my trust...I like
