Very good written, and to give it more authenticity we can add about that woman that needed to relocate to Texas after been raped again and again by some force that one University thought of caught with liquid nitrogen.

Thank you for reminding us of what Memorial Day really is. I had forgotten.
I recall going to the cemetery as a child on Memorial Day with my parents. My mother's brother, a local World War II paratrooper and war hero was part of the honor guard who would fire their rifles in the solemn ceremony that lasted only about an hour before we went to have a family get together for the rest of the day, grateful to be off work. I remember jumping out of my skin when I heard the loud report from those rifles. It must've been terrible during the war.
Unfortunately, my uncle had a very bad case of PTSD. He was an alcoholic and his trucking business was failing. He left his 2nd wife and 5 children behind to take off with a local barmaid who also left 5 children for California and a life of hiding In California and retirement in Boise Idaho. He died about 1989. When his wife died about 2003, her children, through a private investigator, found her and the house they lived in that they had given to their next-door neighbors. There were pictures and documents in the house so all of the children finally knew what happened to their father and mother.
After that, living in Wisconsin Memorial Day was the first day when everyone rushed off to local parks or private cottages on lakes and generally got three days of too much sun and sunburn. Like you wrote, the first day of summer in that part of our world. When I was working at TSU, we worked that day because we took Juneteenth off instead of Memorial Day. After work, I left early and my wife and I drove out to a state park where almost no one else was there. Most people around here like to head to the beach in Galveston. It is always very crowded. I member doing that one day and glad I never did again.

Cataract surgery is one of those miracles of modern science. I'm so glad that you took the cure and are able to come back with your writing again. I wish there was a similar surgery for my hearing loss, but there isn't.
My twin brother had cataract surgery last year and has returned to 20/20 vision he didn't have before. But I still watch television, read and write without wearing glasses with no sign of cataracts, yet.
There is an epidemic of former ADers coming back and I love it!

I can see this happening for many. Wondering if life is slipping them by while they are in isolation. Well-penned with the realization and knowledge, the reality, that this will end once a viable vaccine is achieved… No small task.
On the contrary, while my life is changing for the worse over time. My condition dictated my being housebound with literally only one or two visitors for the entire past year, with or without the threat of the coronavirus. Strange but true. The reality that I'm faced with that makes me very much a realist, too.

Not having children and not teaching for nearly 40 years, school years have come and gone without much notice except the annoying increase in traffic.
And at a certain age, especially when I finished my autobiography in 2014, I always think each book will be my last. But something keeps telling me to open a new chapter and I begin writing again. And on my last day, I will probably leave an unfinished work in progress.

Dear Amber,
It's fitting that you named your poem, "Crossroads of Our Lives" because it's exactly what it is, a HUGE crossroad!
I am a college professor and my wife is a nurse. Our professions are part of who we are in life. I love helping students learn and she loves helping folks to recover physically. We decided never to retire completely from our professions. I am down to 1-2 days a week. She will be scaling back from 40 to 32 hours next year. Then hopefully she will find a nursing position that allows her more freedom working just a few hours here and there.
When I was not working at all I felt empty and lost. Yes, I did all kinds of volunteer work and I still do but that never takes the place of what you trained for your entire adult life.
Too many folks retire all at once and wither away. They have NO sense of purpose and they get depressed easily. Even folks who tell you how happy they are at parties will tell you the truth after the party is over. The truth is for far too many people, retirement sucks!
So keep busy at what you do the best. Live a balanced life. That is you need to be physically, mentally and spiritually sound. If you can do that you'll have the BEST life all around.

It's good to hear from you again. And I think I know why you haven't been able to post. In the profession that you're in, with your reputation and skill grown with time, it is very tempting to keep carrying on and find your whole life wrapped up in your work.
The key to a happy retirement is having something to retire to. Men who have worked hard all their lives, particularly those in supervisory positions, sometimes have great difficulty in retirement with nobody to boss anymore. I worried about my father, a truck driver, because he didn't seem to have any hobbies except participating until he was about 45 in softball and watching sporting events, couch potato style. And then, he discovered golf at 60 and had a happy golfing retirement with lots of friends and projects with friends for the rest of his life.
So, since you are a writer, like me, I suggest you find a comfy place to live, perhaps far from Manhattan, and be inspired to do some writing that will keep you occupied through the long winter months and some traveling during the summers to get inspiration for writing. Since you have a special skill, you could go online and do custom work for selected customers on a much lesser scale than you have been. Like Ed wrote, retirement is really a time to do what you like, and not what your employer likes for you to do.

Great timing. When we get snow, make snow cones. It was great to see people get out on the streets of New York without cars and just walk around. To see the kids in Philadelphia sliding down a cascade of stairs covered over by snow was wonderful as well as the ban on sliding removed from the Capitol so the kids could slide there as well.
It looks like 2016 is starting off well by your first poem of optimism.

Because the moon is part of your namesake, it will always influence you with its power and the pull of its gravity, along with its beautiful image in the night sky. I have never personally seen a blue moon. I thought it is only in poetry. I never knew what kind of mood I would be in if I ever saw one. I know the full moon gets people to be more emotional as well. Thank you for sharing your well-expressed poem!
