I'm not much fond of all of the rehash of ghost stories, and worse vampires, zombies and the lot.
I have a simple explanation for ghosts. Recently, only in the last few years, when I'm half awake and partially dreaming, a good source of my short stories, I will occasionally see a person in living color, sometimes in the room and sometimes very close to me. Even though I never recognize who or what these images are, I don't believe they are ghosts apart from my mind, but merely images that my brain conjures up while sorting through memories for long-term memory storage.
Your encounter, when you were young, appears to be like mine. Your brain was trying to process your great aunt's loss and conjured up a scene for you, including her voice that made you think that it was real… It surely was real in your brain, but not necessarily at the end of the hall.

Christmas Magic 1959 short story (Short Story) - 12/20/2016 6:57:00 AM
You seem to have a photographic memory of the details of that 1959 Christmas. As I read it brought back many memories. My parents had bought a nearly new house that we enjoyed in town. But that fall my twin brother got pneumonia that almost killed him. He had to have surgery that December to remove scar tissue from his lungs. Anyway, they never told us what the hospital bills were, but we lost that house and had to buy an old farmhouse in the country because my younger twin brothers came along that October to add to the bills.
You are very accomplished as a writer. This story is a good example of the kind of detail and real-life experience you convey.
Moving to the country turned out to be a very good deal in the end.
