I'd say the difference between love and in love are degrees of emotion. A bit like fancying somebody, but not loving them. If you have ever been in love you will know the difference. It's inexplicable except to say you go ga-ga over the object of your desires.

facets to it. People have their own definition anyways. Love is mysterious when you fall for someone. Perhaps we should just accept it for what it is. Loving someone for who they are.

A wonderfully thought provoking article!
I think we all instinctively know whether or not we are "In Love" as compared to just loving someone with all the variants that love brings.
Between a Man & A Woman, it starts off with a Cupids arrow, the firelighter, and it crackles if there is that undeniable magnetism. However that is the Eros stage, and from there it must develop further, into an Agape Love! That is not to say that the Eros disappears,to the contrary, it may be a little dormant every once in a while or even for quite a while, but if Agape is present, then the spark will ignite again and again. We feel vibes from our partners, we sense their thoughts and feelings, we are bowled over by their pheromones, we are in short, turned on just by looking at them, and wish to tune in much more!! It is when a Potential cupids arrow seems to embed, but not deeply, and falls away after a time, without injecting the full measure of it's toxicity, thus Agape cannot grow from there. In other words, two ppl cannot grow, for once reason or another the mix just wasnt right, and no amount of wishing, hoping can make it. Two people either fall deeply into love or they don't. It is always wise to understand when this happens, and know to walk away, rather than try to flog a dead horse, setting oneself up for a miserable life, or time that is spent, where it could be much better spent elsewhere when we realize it just isnt happening. He's either into you, or he's not, or she's just not that much into you! Love is not complex, but peoples inability to realize what kind of love is made that way. We all need to be totally in touch with out emotions, and have a good dose of reality. Love or let go, whichever is the instinct.

The wonderful thing about hitting rock bottom (which I have done in my life in the past) is that you never forget and always go out of your way to do whatever you can to help those less fortunate...whether it is to give a toonie to the squeezy kids or volunteer at a local soup kitchen...it all helps.

Well Carroll I am a man so I will try to answer your question from that point of view. What you wrote was wonderful and I pretty much agree with you about love is love, but I'm not the average man.
That said I think "men" mean, that love has gone from a romantic love to a love like a family love without the attachment.
As far as the sex goes, I don't think there are too many guys who will not find an excuss to make love to his gal. There's always that one more time.
I always thought that saying "but I'm not 'in' love with you", was just some sick excuess to get out of a relationship without giving the real reason?

I am no expert on this subject but I think that some people get confused as to what love really is. It isn't something that is rushed
and the only way to tell the difference between love and infatuation is
time. Infatuation is a strong attraction to someone that we feel like the world begins and ends with that person. After a while reality sets in and, of course, no one person can complete you. That is a tall order. Happiness is an inside job. You must love yourself
before anyone can truly love you. Love is a gift you give of yourself
to another. That is why when you are a whole person inside, you

Perhaps you said it best when you contrasted a romantic love for someone with a platonic love. "In love" is (in my mind at least) a mutually exclusive relationship. My husband (of twenty-three years) ad I are "in love." Have been in love almost from first sight. People kept saying, "Oh, you're just infatuated. It'll wear off." Twenty-three years later the mutual exculsivity of the condition we call "being in love," is as srong as ever. I don't just love Michael, I am deeply in love with him--a love that is shared by no other. This could not be said of a platonic relationsip. You have asked a good question, D.L. I'm no expert but I think if you are in love you literally "adore" the beloved. You want to be with them, near them. Lust is a part of it, you want to touch them, make love with them but the lust stems from the admiration you feel for them and the spiritual and emotional bond you share. I believe that you can actually "Love" someone. Care about them, have their best interest at heart but not feel those same admiration, companionship and need to touch that you do with someone you are "In love with". There are many reasons why you can love someone but not be in love with them. A past history, a commonality of a shared life, a family you share, a desire to not bring pain to them even if you are on completely different emotional plains. Many other reasons I'm sure but these are some of my thoughts on the subject.

I think this terminology refers to as you suggested infatuation...often years do deaden the desire of one person or the other in a relationship and it goes from not being able to stand being away from someone to knowing they are part of your life but not constantly on your mind. Is it lust only perhaps but often it is just the butterflies in the tummy so to speak that makes us "in love".

Good advice. While trained reporters are schooled on making sure they have the facts verified before publishing or posting the news, modern technology makes almost everyone a reporter by posting to sites that promote sensational news like the old scandal sheets used to do.

I so relate. My family, my wife's family, and our extended families all have factions that are disconnected and at odds. Despite this kind of pain and frustration being somewhat universal, I've found it is always surprisingly isolating. You can love them, forgive them, want the best for them, but often you just have to move on without them. A broken family is like a shattered mirror. My mother and her mother loved to travel with me. Mom loved to go to casinos, too. But only dad reported winning jackpots.
But you also reminded me of the night, at 95, unable to hear and unable to get anyone to help her even though she could no longer walk without a walker, made it to the bathroom, but fell. She died the next day. And I was 2000 miles away and hadn't seen her for nine years as she declined and my sister cared for her.

While the news is full of mayhem and disorder, partly brought on by powerful people seeking to increase their wealth and their prominence, the average person, worldwide, continues like they always have, eking out a living, regardless.
It is these people who come to the rescue whenever they see someone in need of help. Politicians be grandstand and come to the aid of disasters, but they move on promising money that often doesn't come.
It's just the way of the world.
You made me remember the countless times that I've been helped by strangers while spending most of my time out in public always in danger of need that had to be carried out by someone else like the simple act of pumping my gasoline that I rarely had any trouble getting someone to do.

"Heightened language" is certainly a good way of addressing it. My favorite definition of a poet (that I can pull off the top of my head) is from W.H. Auden. "A poet is, before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language." I fully concur. Then Anne Sexton has a cute take on it. No better legacy can be given. I have no children to give my physical assets to. So I am giving most to my alma mater and my partner. With the rest given to my siblings and their families.
A few years before she died at 95, my mother wrote, My Story, for my brothers, my sister and me. Although it was quite short, it revealed a lot of things about her early life that she never told us before, like when she met our father at 14 and fell in love. I only wish she had written more
But as the first in our extended family to go to college and travel the world, free from the drudgery of just working for a living, I leave a legacy in my autobiography and a book of memoirs. Hopefully, my attitude, kindness to others and good fortune will shine through future generations. Not just for my family, but for others who might pick up the books and read.

A poem with a lot of good advice. Some people seem to be able to rebound easily. For others, it's difficult. For me, it seemed impossible. Long periods of unemployment can be very hurtful to the ego of the person who worked hard to get somewhere and then lost it because of some political or greedy management move.
We all have something to offer. The trick is how to make sure that those who need our services know what it is. In my case, many employers were totally unsure that they could employ someone with growing paralysis to be of any use at all. Why I'm glad that I'm retired and doing what I want to do. Not making any money with writing, but enjoying writing my heart out.

I just closed a chapter today of a great load that was placed on me last September relieved today with a phone call from the person who placed the load.
Just yesterday I wrote a small story to my nephew who just acquired a 1938 Buick Special about a 1939 Buick Special that my father brought new and sold to my grandparents. My twin brother and I were in it when my grandmother rolled it the first time. She rolled it the 2nd time on Route 66 outside of Flagstaff, never driving on ice or in mountains again. My nephew loved the story of his great grandmother's adventures in a Buick.

Yes, firefighters save so many lives by going into fires putting them out. Your poem gets to the essence of what it's like to be in a fire and think that you might lose everything.
A few years ago we awoke to a bright orange glow, crackling sounds and people yelling what my partner thought was a loud party until we realize that it was a fire two doors down and the yelling was the people from that house jumping over the fence and pounding on the back window of the house next door to escape. And then, we heard firemen pounding on our door as I got into my wheelchair to leave the house.
My great uncle was a fire chief. His third wife after losing two of them to sickness, told me that he had black long from breathing smoke. But he lived to be 98.

I seen an old picture...a Christmas scene from late fifties complete with tree and tricycles etc around it and the thought crossed my mind what I wouldn't give to have one more day like that. I truly grew up in the best of times...we had little but we were happy and we were loved.

So true. So many are believing lies on the Internet these days. It helps to have good lie detector to keep from being caught up in a lie. Trained journalists are taught to check their sources and verify them before reporting. It is sad that so many do not believe the mainstream news sources anymore. They are still the harbingers of truth.
However, I find the use of "impact" to be overused and misused. It means to be hit hard by something, like, "The impact of the car hitting the barrier was followed by the impact of his head on the windshield because he wasn't wearing his chest belt and the car had no airbag."
I much prefer, for most things that affect us or make an "impression" on us something more realistic. No one is impacted by seeing a flock of foreboding crows landing in a tree. They may just be frightened.

The nautical analogy is quite apropos. My little life raft has been floating nicely since October when I quit going out because my intense sweating does not bode well in cold weather. But why do I need to go out at all everything I need this brought to me by my loving partner? My cornucopia is overflowing without my doing anything. Simply wonderful, this staying in place without any social distancing from her at all.

If we don't leave the house, there's no reason why we can't be intimate or close with one another.

I don't look at the situation as humbling at all. Rather a chance to reflect on what we are doing and how we could be doing things better. Also a time of resolve, getting together in new ways like helping out those in need, and coming up with ways to beat the virus so that it doesn't beat us.

A nice way of chronicling all the benefits of families getting together and having close communion at home that normally in our busy lifestyles doesn't happen very often anymore.
When I see different is this medium of the Internet which allows us in touch with many, many more people than the older means of communication like the telephone and human one-on-one discourse.
It is certainly good to see how kind and helpful people are in a situation like this. The bad news that we normally hear every day seems to have digressed into the background, so very little of it is happening anymore.

I count myself lucky to live on a Lagoon, a block from the ocean (gulf actually, but who notices?). I know I take it for granted after living here for so long. Sometimes however, I do just sit on my pier and admire the beauty of everything, along with my buddy, a blue heron that has been around here for 15 years.

Creative and innovative. We can make silicon from sand and electrical energy from silicon.
I think that true entrepreneurs, those that create advancements in knowledge and uplift humanity are rare. I've been watching Shark Tank and find that a majority of entrepreneurs are imitating other entrepreneurs in the realm of conspicuous consumption that is the source of many of our problems, creating jobs of low value and equally low, pay.
What the future needs are those that will risk everything to create a better world and not waste time and energy on frivolous throw away gimmicks that may bring riches to the owner but do little for our economy or the well-being of everyone.
Spending my life as an energy conservation professional, what we need is many who are willing to come up with innovative ways of producing electricity without destroying the environment further. That goal is in our reach, but we must not focus on just jobs or wealth building in order to reach it.

Loving oneself the way we are is the first step to being happy and healthy. On the other hand, if we recognize that we are too fat, or our eating habits make us anorexic, then we should be conscious enough of ourselves to self correct.
So many make excuses for their troubles when they cause them by personal abuse like taking drugs, eating too much or other unhealthy practices trying to mask real feelings with symptom relievers.
