Having already lived beyond my predicted statistical moving average, I can state with reasonable certainty that all you have written is easily defensible and probably true. Being a late starter I'm just now reaching my two big moments. Win, lose, or draw I am leaping into the fray to find what each holds. At the end I expect to be completely exhausted with nothing left in my tanks. I refuse to carry the additional baggage called "regrets" to my grave. Thanks for your astute summary.

Very interesting. You're describing a trap that is similar to a Ponzi scheme. First of all, making money is not success. Making money can be very miserable and time-consuming. Success is a sense of accomplishment or achievement that gives one well-being. Of course, the amount of money for people to be financially independent varies depending upon their needs.
Shysters know that people are desperate to earn more money, more quickly, especially since the middle class has been losing ground over the past 30 years worldwide. In desperate times, people flock to get-rich-quick schemes like lotteries and other ways to get out of their financial predicaments. Many turned to business formation with their savings. I believe the last time I saw the statistics, nine out of ten new businesses fail within the first two years. Most people don't have any idea how to run a business.
So, people flock to seminars where well-dressed and well spoken people claim that they make lots of unverified money with their special formula for "success." They make money on the seminars by paid admission and by selling their books at them. Most of these Tony Robbins clones never really succeed in anything except fleecy desperate people with their fake success story.

I don't think writers can measure success on business models. The competition is too fierce and the glut of "free" eBooks desensitizes potential consumers. The terms "success" and "failure" become more subjective. You as an individual determine if you've been successful or not on your own terms. Writers don't have to be part of the rat race.

While it's short and doesn't have any twist, your story resonates with frustrated writers everywhere. I recall, not too long ago when writers refused to use the mouse at all, saying that the only way to operate a computer properly was to use those wonderful multiple keystrokes to get things done. And then, of course, there were those that refused to use the computer at all because "the only way to write is with pencil to pad, so that one can clearly show all the corrections made to the manuscript on its way to the publisher."
And, I will even go back to whether the fountain pen left the quill and ink well behind or when paper forced parchment from the writing scene. I write with my voice. Unfortunately, the system won't accept my dirty words… Even the relatively minor ones.
I don't blame my equipment for writers' block. However, the latest mice have so much going on with finger manipulation that I can't use them. And, my 15-year-old single click mice are getting old and worn out. The one I'm using on this computer is quite haywire and causes all kinds of incorrect actions like sending messages twice and openings apps I don't want to use. But I can't blame that on bad writing or the inability to write.

A great article for those who find themselves out of a job and can write well enough to work online. Of course there are pitfalls in many scams that will draw people in--for money--and no real job. I would recommend WritersWeekly.com for both paying jobs and for scams to look out for while looking for work and doing it.
I wrote my entire professional life according to the rules provided by my superiors. I had success and some promotions for my writing articles, policies, procedures, computer programs etc. etc. So, when I retired/was fired in 2011, I collected unemployment for three years. All the while being given menial jobs like stocking shelves, etc.
I spend my time now writing and publishing what I write. It's a freedom that only hard work and saving throughout your working life can give you.

That's why there are hotlines, and perhaps, Internet sites, where trouble people can go to and have candid and helpful help from others with mental illness, survivors of suicide attempts, themselves.
As a perfectly straight, not muddled by drugs, person without mental illness, who suffered from depression for a time but never had any suicidal thoughts, I don't think I make a very good counselor of those who do have delusions or suicidal thoughts that they sometimes, try to carry out.

I think of the flamethrower as one of the most hideous weapons of man, along with land mines. To be burned alive when you are hiding from bullets must be a terrible way to die. And you can't put your hands up in surrender or run out to try to escape, because you'd be running into the flames and sure death anyway.
