Yes he was - he was a product of his time. In 1862 when he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, he also noted that something would have to be done with freed blacks, and he wanted to send them out of the country, somewhere else. Finally someone pointed out to him that blacks made good cannon fodder, so he allowed them to enlist. No, he was not a 'great' man - but he was a human being in a very difficult period in the nation's history. But yes, there is a reason most blacks are Democrats today.
