Negative comments of this kind, to children or adults, attacks peoples self-worth and generates not positive change but rather resistence to change and self-hatred. I am recently retired from 30 years as a clinical social worker in Canada. My novel, Reflections from Shadow, is in part written from the point of view of a child's mind as he attempts to understand, and deal with the adult world.

I try to watch what I eat; am not always successful, but I try to stay away from the sweets. Once in a while, a piece of pumpkin pie or a bit of ice cream does sound good, though. :) I try to eat healthy; not always successful, but the effort is there! :) (I stay away from greasy food, or if I can't, I try to blot off as much as the grease as I can before it goes into my mouth. Nothing worse than burgers or fries swimming in grease; that's NASTY!!) And who CARES how much you weigh? I don't; I love you just as you are! (And I'm no skinny minnie; I weigh over 150 pounds! I'm a little butterball!)

Carol. Nice poem. I think your indentations work well, and so does the use of --dashes. I like "sunlit morning's room", as if the morning owns the room. Cool. The poet's mother had words of wisdom, but a woman can tell the difference between Lines and lines, the latter being genuine.

God, Got, Gott; "Grüss Teus, Deus, Odin." Deus, same as Zeus; God means I SALUTE ZEUS. DEUS, a word of the "Pontifex" for ZEUS. Note: Until the eleventh century, the word in English was "DEUS"; then it became "Got" from German "GOTT", and "GOD" after half of the eleventh century... Oh... let me get back to the poem!

It seems that it is time for a complete "Exorcism".
This poem developed the subject well to the penultimate line... There the exorcism didn't work. The seventh word of the closing line comes from the Greek-Roman empire, and it means I SALUTE ZEUS. (ZEUS-DEUS-TEUS-ODIN.)
I read a profound composition... "Exorcism" is a poetic accomplished goal, and the subject dealt developed a clear picture to convey the message.

That's what's messed up Christ's message: mankind and their interpretations of what God should be. Sad. Jesus Himself said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Carol, This is a great rhyme scene. It would be difficult for me to do, but you've succeeded with hard work, I'm sure. The poem seems to me a bit depressing, but in a good way. It's reassuring to conclude that our fate is "dust to dust," so that answers cannot always be found. Mysteries are meant to be, the mystery of Life being one we cannot decifer. Do I detect a note of faith here?! Good metaphors. Liked it, but boo hoo! Kathy

I found this piece to be soothing, yet frantic, in the language of 'the attic'. Your attic. My attic. Our attic. Very effectual use of phonics, syllables and rhyme timed with self, to my mind.

Carol, I like the format of 4-line stanzas. I don't think you need capital letters at the beginning of each line. I'd like to hear more details: photographs of what? her relatives? Which dreams passed her by? memories of what, specifically? Also, the author's viewpoint: where are you exactly? downstairs in a house? I love your closure, the last two lines. They sound good and paint a picture for me. "mixes metaphors with tears" is excellent, sort of a writer's in-joke! A nice poem, thank you,

I think when we are younger we have more enegy to restore so we seem to sleep longer but as we get older we need less and less sleep. I know this is true for me. It's like having an alarm clock in one's mind which never lets you sleep past a certain hour. I'm a very light sleeper anyway. Had to learn that years ago and it seemed to always stay with me.
