Joy Collins' Second Chance has scored a hit at iUBR. There are several issues indigenous to the subject matter of Second Chance that could easily have sent it spiraling out of control into the depths of mediocrity, but this tragedy never happened. Ms. Collins is an experienced, mature author, even if this is her first published novel. Although the storyline sounds like just another Kleenex-soaked Lifetime movie with a predictable ending pasted onto a long string of boo-hoos, that description could not be further from the truth. Second Chance is a slice of modern life plotline carefully explained through the conversations and actions of the lead characters. Joy Collins knows how to show-don't-tell in the finest tradition of authorship. The surface story is simple; the characters are complex; and the compositional style is satisfying. Joy Collins joins the top ranks of new authors.
