You have shared a complaint that many of us have had over the years. Traditional publishing with agent advocates is dying structure that we probably shouldn't waste our time with. The old adage, "the cream will rise to the top," applies. Of course, marketing and publicity is in order for a first novel or effort to become known, but bad books will still become bestsellers for all the wrong reasons. And the works of genius will be hidden in the back pages of Google searches and never found even if they are looked for.
My parents spent a wonderful 20 years of retirement in South Texas. In addition to Lonesome Dove, No Country for Old Men, and others are a good example of what can come out of South Texas because longtime rich history of the country. The television series, The Son, seemed to sum up a good bit of that history one man.
